Evan Williams Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 28, 2014 (edited August 18, 2018)Damn that was a lot of oak. I agree - a complex bourbon for quite the bargain. A bit spicier, brinier and saltier than expected (or I like) and not quite as sweet. This has a bite to it and strong cask flavor that I love. Later review reminds me what an excellent deal this is. Character, depth of flavor profile for a bargain. Reminds me of summer in my Grandpa's wood shop at the old pond house. And the sawdust on the nose is like hauling home a stack of 2x4s. [12.17.2017] A follow-up note on this bottle. Still just a bit saltier than I prefer but such a versatile whiskey that I like to keep a couple bottles around. When someone tells you it's too strong, remind them that getting "86'd" was getting cut off to the weak crap. They'd never cut it back in Western days. -
Reviewed this once before but it didn't save. Good whiskey for the price, subtle cherry flavor and truly a bourbon unlike its competition from Tennessee. A bit stiff but will do the trick on ice over the summer. Later found my older note on a separate entry for the same product. "Closer to 2.5 stars, just don't follow a fine bourbon or scotch with this bottle. It has a bit too much ethanol taste that can hide the oak and cherry flavors. Not as sour as Jack."

Glenlivet 18 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 8, 2014 (edited February 5, 2015)Probably not as smokey or peaty as I like my whiskey, but this is smooth, flavorful and sweet/fruity. None of that salty/briny. But some floral and vanilla is hiding in there. Don't drink this with ice, you'll miss the experience. Later notes, this is a personal favorite because of some of the great moments celebrated by a splash of this. Weddings, jobs and babies, this has highlighted some great moments. Tastes floral, sweet honey, vanilla and malt. -
New Holland Beer Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Michigan), USA
Reviewed August 7, 2014 (edited April 24, 2018)I bet the barrel tastes good. But seriously, are they using this to make beer or vice versa? Not as bad as the critics say. I taste vanilla and oak, the finish is smooth but there's a hollowness throughout. Something is missing and it's probably with the devil or the angels. Needs more bourbon and less woody water. Many sips later, the pepper emerges. -
Speyburn Bradan Orach
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 25, 2014 (edited October 13, 2014)Sweet from the beginning, honey and vanilla are full throughout. Not very smokey or salty. A bit tart at the end. This would be better with a thick peat or maybe some smoke with less sweetness. Ryan is right - malty at the end. I like that. -
Like most Jamesons, it is light on everything. But so smooth, sweet with a hint of maple and a solid barrel flavor. Smoke and fruit is perfectly balanced. This is underrated by the reviewers. 3/17/2015. Happy St. Patty's to all. Thought I'd start my day off smooth with his over ice. I don't recommend as it crashes out the fruit (you can see essential oils come out of solution) and leaves just smoke.

Ardmore Traditional Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 23, 2014 (edited April 24, 2018)Tried this to get more peat but there were some other flavors I couldn't get along with. Sweet, citrus an a bit too oily for my liking.
