Arran Amarone Cask Finish Single Malt
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2017 (edited April 6, 2021)Dried wine skins, oak and hint of orchard fruit on the nose, followed by some cooked pears, honey and clove on the palate. There is a bit of a burn on the finish, but otherwise ends on a dry and peppery note. Not bad, but not the most enjoyable whisky for me. -
Deanston 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2017 (edited September 19, 2017)Inoffensive, but painfully dull... so painful that it pains me to write this review. Weak nose, but faint notes of vanilla, cereal and oak emerge. There are hints of apples and honey, but otherwise a very dull palate. Following suit, a short and forgettable finish. This whisky gets three stars only because it's not downright disgusting. -
Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2017 (edited July 8, 2020)Vanilla, orchard fruit and brown sugar on the nose. Creamy mouthful, with candied apples, bananas and touch of lemon on the palate. Prickly oak spice on the finish was a little intense for me, but otherwise a decent dram. Worth a try, but I would certainly not buy this bottle. -
Macallan Double Cask 12 Year
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2017 (edited October 5, 2017)Vanilla, caramel and dried fruit (raisins) on the nose, followed by some honey, citrus and cinnamon spice on the palate. The finish is smooth and relatively short. As light and uncomplicated as this whisky is, it is nevertheless a delicious dram. -
Port Askaig 100° Proof
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed July 20, 2017 (edited October 21, 2017)Fair amount of peat, aniseed and pipe tobacco on the nose. The mouthful is silky, with a sweet and salty combination of dark caramel and sea salt on the palate. The finish is lightly smoked, spiced and fairly long. All the flavours come together quite nicely for me. Really good stuff. -
Glen Scotia Victoriana
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed July 20, 2017 (edited September 27, 2017)This is quite the robust dram, holding its own very well with a few drops of water added. There is some charred oak, olive brine and hint of citrus on the nose, followed by some strawberries, roasted almonds and dark chocolate on the palate. The finish is warm, fruity and relatively long. Worth a try. -
Highland Park 10 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 20, 2017 (edited August 2, 2017)Floral and lightly peated nose. Light malt, toffee and lemon peel on the palate. The finish is shorter and a bit spicier than its 12-year counterpart, but a respectable dram nonetheless. Good value dram for those setting sail on the viking journey ($60 CAD). -
Highland Park Dark Origins
Single Malt — Orkney, Scotland
Reviewed July 20, 2017 (edited October 5, 2017)Light peat, dark chocolate, and notes of citrus on the nose. Sweet and silky mouthful, with dried plums and hints of fudge on the palate. Light smoke and medium length finish. Smooth, tasty and worth a try. -
Glenlivet Founder's Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 19, 2017 (edited August 3, 2017)Vanilla, green apples and malted cereal on the nose. The mouthful is exceptionally thin, but tasty nonetheless with light notes of orchard fruit and citrus on the palate. The finish is fruity and terribly short. Overall, a flimsy and one-dimensional whisky for me... the Coors Light of single malts. -
