Green Spot Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed August 22, 2021 (edited December 22, 2021)This is nice pot still Irish. Nose brings sweet apple, bubble yum and gentle malt with some light barrel spice. Its delicate but still has presence. Palate is soft and fruity with the apple joined by ripe pear. There is a rich maltiness alongside spiced wood notes to round it out. Finish carries the palate but drops quickly and tannic notes come in for a slight bitterness. Overall quite pleasant and enjoyable but I prefer Redbreast. RB is more malt driven where this is an orchard. It will come down to personal preference as usual but Green Spot is without a doubt high quality Irish whiskey.......88/10056.0 USD per Bottle -
Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Hye, Texas, USA
Reviewed August 17, 2021 (edited September 29, 2021)I reversed the normal progression. I had Cowboy first, Balmo second, then this. Okay had Honeydew too but thats just this with the honey finishing. Let me get it out of the way..... Cowboy and Balmo are far superior to this and deserving of their pricetags. I will also state this is clearly overpriced. It is not worth triple the cost of Buffalo Trace but I really dont care. This is a small craft distillery that produces some of the best bourbon available today. This small batch 94 proof has the unique Garrison funk and is so tasty and different from most brands pricing is not a factor. Its a 3 series BMW vs a Chevy Cruze of course the premium cost is not practically worth it but we are not talking about thousands of dollars to upgrade. This is graham cracker and caramel on the nose with light barrel spice. The lovely flour musk/bit o' honey Garrison signature is present. Palate has good mouthfeel leading to crumb cake, runny honey caramel and spicy barrel. Finishes well with all the flavors lingering and splintered wood the final takeaway. Its tastes just like honeydew without the extra honey as expected which is a good thing. My only issue is the other company stablemates. Despite the cost Cowboy and Balmo are so absolutely epic they throw shade at this. Those 2 are experience bourbons with the price tag to go along with it. This could be a good daily but its just too expensive. Its a shame cause this is a quality product with good flavors you just dont find everywhere......83/100.....Have to admit I will not repurchase due to cost74.0 USD per Bottle -
Macallan 12 Year Triple Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed August 9, 2021 (edited August 3, 2022)This 12 year Triple Cask has got the Macallan house flavor with malty figs, orange peel and spice but some bitterness works its way into the palate/finish. I think its maybe too much messing around with the casking. It is lighter and less full bodied/rich than the other 12's. Its still tasty cause its Macallan but I would no way repurchase. Double Cask 12 and even more so the Sherry 12 are the way to go.........79/100....Im a bit disappointed by this one63.0 USD per Bottle -
Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2011
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 3, 2021 (edited August 3, 2022)Okay so I have Islay Barley 2011 Edition for this review. I love all the Bruichladdich Ive tried. Classic Laddie, Port Charlotte standard and 10 yr are all just great. This scotch being unpeated is very similar to Classic Laddie(see my review for full notes). Its got that pure malty scotch goodness alongside light smoke and barrel char. This has more brightness and lets call it lemon pepper seasoning than Laddie which carries more honey. Slightly different but still delish this is for scotch purists who care about terroir. I wont buy this again as it cost $15 more than Classic in my area which I prefer but absolutely no regrets . Furthermore some may prefer the extra spice. If you have never had any Bruichladdich this is still highly recommended........89/100........PC10 and Classic Laddie are magnificent though imo65.0 USD per Bottle -
Found this at Total Wine and jumped on it as I am a total Balcones disciple. They take their standard single malt (which is pretty great) and finish it in freshly dumped Madeira casks from Texas based Haak Winery. This gives a deep ruby tone and a succulent aroma. Nose is bursting with dark fruits and berries. Blackberry, plum, blackcurrant present with malt and light ginger in the background. Palate is dense with the heavy dark fruits merging with the house malty peach profile. Mild barrel and baking spice support with a flash of tobacco leaf. Finish is long carrying the palate notes adding a bit of dark chocolate and drying oak. To give some perspective this is more earthy and shall I say damp than a bright sugary sweet sherry finish. Another home run for Balcones which at this point is not surprising. If you like their other single malts and happen to see this buy it. To quote Mike Damone "you wont regret it".....91/100.......I paid $75 for this its worth it75.0 USD per Bottle

Well I dont know if this stuff changed or what. I had high hopes and was very disappointed. There is some quality to it but just too thin and bitter for my tastes. It has some faint sweetness, light butter notes and maybe a bit of complexity but wham its gone fading to dry sour barrel. I suppose rum guys who hate added sugary sweetness have a shot with this but its a hard pass for me. That said it will serve fine as a mixer.........67/100....no hogo to be found either38.0 USD per Bottle

Here is another inexpensive smoky scotch thats decent. Poured neat/couple drops nose is packing tape, resin smoke and saline with a pinch of red fruit and oak. Palate brings lots of pink erasers, damp smoke(blast after water thrown on burning plastic) and some sweet malt colored with vegetative notes, think broccoli/brussel. Finish is somewhat bitter but salty smoke and sweet cigar tobacco last long enough to offset. This is a different profile from many smoky Islay scotches but doesnt have enough depth or flavor power to really register. At the price point its interesting but I would not repurchase.....76/100.....I prefer a traditional peated track such as Shieldaig or Ardmore for my bargain smoker33.0 USD per Bottle

Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 4, 2021 (edited August 22, 2021)Well Ive read a lot of middling reviews on this but I think the story is changing. Researched a bit and Im liking where these guys are going with a strong commitment to quality. Poured neat, nose is jumping out of glass with spicy woods, salted caramel, dusty books and a hint of rye dill masked behind light raspberry. Sewing machine oil mouthfeel brings bold palate of melted caramel and butter, salty charred barrel and a spicy sizzle. Its not overtly peppery like some WT and FR offerings just a high rye and chile flake warming heat with some baking spice flair. Finish is tongue depressor and sweet butter with pipe tobacco joining fading spicy caramel. Dries out a bit but it works. Its said they are sourcing BF now but doesn't taste like any that Ive had. It may be in house juice I dunno but its been long enough I believe that to be possible. I find this well balanced with deep bourbon flavors that keep you sippin. Its not complex just delivers what a whiskey drinker wants.......87/100......At $40ish I do not find this overpriced and would take it over most lower cost choices. If I see any other variety of Michters bottles on the shelf I will buy........the unblended is great too42.0 USD per Bottle -
Talisker 2010 Distillers Edition (Bottled 2020)
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 1, 2021 (edited March 23, 2023)I love the 10yr and the storm so this was logical next step. I gotta say Talisker seems to be one of the most volatile scotches in regards to pricing. I see it drastically different across the country and even in Texas I see wide variation. I also have to say Talisker is by far the most toffee driven profile I have encountered which I love. I mean smoked Heath bar is stamped all over the line. I think this provides a level of candy store comfort that draws so many admirers to the brand whether on a conscience level or not. This is the smoky malty goodness of the 10 yr wrapped in fruit sweetness. Its very tasty but imo the finishing dulls and flattens the notes of the 10 yr. Kinda comes off like a blend if you know what I mean. It is no doubt delicious but not worth the price bump to me......87/10087.0 USD per Bottle -
Compass Box The Story of the Spaniard
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed June 21, 2021 (edited October 15, 2022)Well for my money its hard to beat Compass Box at most levels in the world of blends. They are masters of delivering a thoroughly enjoyable experience in many different varieties and price points. This is no exception. It has the soft sweet sherry fruit nose. Rich fruity/malty palate with light woods and just a hint of peat. Pleasant lasting finish with no off notes to be found. Are there better single malts in this range sure but some are spikey and uneven. This is just smooth sailing, succulent and delicious. Think of the Spaniard as the JW Green of sherried blends........87/100..... not a huge note taker(there if you want to suss out ) just damn good VERY drinkable scotch. Great gift with the artwork and easy ride like an old Trans Am with T-tops on a summer night60.0 USD per Bottle
