1.23.22 Served: Neat, flute Bottle Opened: 1 month ago The brief: Smells like black truffle-infused cynar. Tastes like a spicier ricola cough drop. Aroma: Deep cola and earth much like the nose of cynar or averna. This draws out into a distinctly pungent, spicy, and savory black truffle aroma. After nasal fatigue (whoops!) The aroma has completely transformed, and now smells of vanilla extract and chocolate waffle cones/chocolate wafers (baked in, not dipped), with a finish more akin to turpentine. Flavor: Light sweetness and body, which makes sense according to the claims of a lower sugar content. Medium light bitterness. Breathing back out after a sip gives the impression of smelling a leather/tobacco oriented men's cologne. The overall flavor is very similar to that of a yellow Ricola cough drop. The finish is lively, with a blend of calabrian pepper-type spice (think spicy meats, much gentler than latin american peppers) and peppermint. Gotta revisit this one. I might have tired my nose out too much by over-sniffing before actually tasting it. Definitely unlike any amaro I've ever had before due to the truffley nose.

1.22.22 Served: Neat, flute Bottle open: <1 Year Comparing with Galliano Aroma: Saffron, curry rice, anise, fennel, hay, caramel Flavor: Hits the tongue sweet and fruity, mainly lemon with light vanilla. Mids with anise and saffron. Finishes savory and starchy like curry rice with a bit of skunkyness too. Beautifully complex. Would pair wonderfully with paella.

Rhine Hall Bierschnapps (Goose Island Standard 1 Year)
Other Spirits — Chicago, USA
Reviewed January 18, 20221.18.22 Served: Neat, Long shot glass Aroma: Clover Honey, Ammonia, Brownies (cocoa vanilla) Flavor: Starts just like the complex Bourbon County Stout with notes of chocolate and coconut. Chocolate continues into malty mids. Finishes lightly bitter. This is the baseline Bourbon County Bierschnapps as a collaboration between Rhine Hall and Goose Island. The stout, already having been aged in bourbon barrels, is distilled and then re-aged in the same barrels for one year, making this spirit a unique product of second and third use aging. Versions that have been re-aged for 3 and 5 years have also been released. -
1.18.22 Served: Neat, Flute Bottle Open: About 2 years Side by side with St. George Baller Aroma: White grape juice, white pear, bran cereal, banana peel. Flavor: Starts as light oak and sawdust. Mids as oxidized/browned pear Finish is mildly bitter with pear skin tannins. Not giving a rating because both whiskeys tasted today were off.

St. George Baller Single Malt Whisky
American Single Malt — California, USA
Reviewed January 17, 2022 (edited December 15, 2022)1.18.22 Served: Neat, flute Bottle Open: 6Mo-1Yr Side by side with Monkey Shoulder Aroma: Ume, vinegar, oxidized wine (sherry, marsala), baker's chocolate Flavor: Starts as ume candy. Mids as overwhelmimgly high proof. After a few sips, the heart is more chocolate and fig. Finishes bitter, then medicinal and skunky. Aftertaste is like cannabis. This is a confusing tasting. I loved this whiskey when I first had it. Now it is repulsive. The sweet aroma clashes with the bitter taste. I wonder if oxidation has occurred or if the last thing I ate is causing this. -
