Blended — ScotlandTasted November 4, 2018Doesn't need any water, balance is nice. Has that smokey wood bite of scotch. Needs no ice, but is pretty bland. Nice for the price, but only a step or two above Kirkland.
Old Grand-Dad Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted November 4, 2018Real heavy on the wood, vanilla too, but the wood seems to be prominent. Almost balanced on it's own, needs the tiniest bit of water. Would like more balance to the flavor, there's not enough richness or depth to balance the oak. A little thin.
Nikka Whisky From the Barrel
Blended — JapanTasted November 4, 2018Very light and harsh like most Japanese whiskeys are, but I don't hate this one. Very light, maybe a fruit flavor, and light wood. Lots of burn, but it's a barrel burn not alcohol. It's still too harsh for me. Bottle was low, perhaps that's why. It's much better than most others I've tried still.
Highland Park 12 Year
Peated Single Malt — Islands, ScotlandTasted November 4, 2018Deep and rich with wood and smoke dominating. Tastes old, but not as rich as I'd expect. Smooth and balanced. The burn is pretty pleasant, but it's a little intense. It's a magnificent scotch , but not much beyond. Paired with dark chocolate is fucking heaven. Fuck me.
Johnnie Walker Black Label
Peated Blend — ScotlandTasted November 4, 2018Tons of sweetness on the nose when I first pour it, vanilla and caramel to me. A little rich and salty, with a small hit of peat smoke but mostly that deep vanilla. Good tail, good burn. Can tell it's a blend but it's rather enjoyable.
Johnnie Walker Red Label
Peated Blend — ScotlandTasted November 4, 2018Much thinner than black, much less smoke. Alcohol is a little overpowering, standard scotch flavor. Some oak and some vanilla. Pretty underwhelming.
Wild Turkey 8 Year 101 Proof (Old Label)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted November 4, 2018It's like drinking black pepper spice. But also rich. No water, just perfection
Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted November 4, 2018Cherries. Cherries on the nose and on the palate. Borderline sharp, only burns sometimes. Makes me think of just good, Middle of the road bourbon, very rich.
Talisker 10 Year
Peated Single Malt — Islands, ScotlandTasted November 4, 2018Rich, perfect balance between smoke and spice. Spice is subtle and deep, and smoke is more smoke than peak. This scotch might be perfect. So smooth the burn is minimal. It lingers forever. It's a five.
Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition
Peated Blend — ScotlandTasted November 4, 2018Toffee on the nose and also on the palate, some deep peat smoke underneath that gives it that scotch taste. Rich and oily texture, the spice comes from black pepper and it's a little bit too high-proof so it has a lot of burn, but the richness makes it okay. Needs just a tiny bit of water to cut the burn. Still very nice, love the balance between spice and sweet.
