Laphroaig Triple Wood
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed November 20, 2016 (edited July 9, 2017)The nose delivers salt, peaty bacon, some alcohol (no surprise with 48% ABV), vanilla and some dried fruits from the sherry influence. Neat the taste starts boldly sweet with a short burn which quickly fades and brings you to some raisins, tamed wood, some peat and a whole barn full of bacon. If you add some drops of water (it takes quite a few) you get a much more smooth dram. It gets very sweet with vanilla from the bourbon casks and the peat gets tamed significantly. The finish is very pleasant with citrus, peat and interesting wood. In conclusion it is a remarkable Laphroig. In terms of maturation it is in the section of Ardbeg Uigedail and Lagavulin DE. It is much cheaper but still very viable option and I really recommend to give it a sip. -
Smokehead Islay Single Malt
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed November 20, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)Nose vanilla, peat and some bacon upfront and some sort of tarmac comes through. The taste starts with sweet vanilla a distinct alcohol burn takes you to a metal youthfulness and a bitter smokey finish which is a sprinter and fades very quickly. Only a unpleasant bitterness sticks to your mouth for quite some time. The balance of this whisky is rather off and all in all it is by far not my favourite dram. Not recommended. -
Aberfeldy 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2016 (edited December 17, 2016)Nose: green apples, vanilla and sugar. The taste is everything you expect from a bourbon matured whisky. There is vanilla, caramel, sugar, citrus and a very faint oak that knocks at the door during the medium long finish along with some pear and charred wood. This is not the most complex dram but still is very well made and a great pleasure to have in the shelf and enjoy every now and then. -
Old Pulteney 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2016 (edited December 4, 2016)Nose: sweet vanilla with salty citrus notes. The taste is very much on par with the nose as there is vanilla, salt, sweetness, caramel and some lemon that takes you to a citrusy oaky finish with a hint of caramel that stays for quite some time that reveals some charred burned wood. In summary this is a beautifully balanced coastal bourbon matured malt that is absolutely worth the money and I highly recommend to try it out! 94/100 considering the price tag
