Bright and cheerful sherry/malt nose with a hint of smoke and saline. The entry is lovely with the sherry notes carrying the spirit into a higher dimension. Virgin oak tones this down somewhat with a dry, tannic element, but this really only comes through at the finish. At the mid-tasting there are notes of honey butter, roasted pecan and sweet rolls. A quite delicate and yet self assured whisky that has plenty of personality.

Cierto Tequila Private Collection Reposado
Tequila Reposado — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed March 9, 2023A spicy and dark coloured nose, with some caramel intertwining with the agave. Somewhat round, but slightly less creamy entry with oaken characteristics lending sweet caramel, brown butter, pecan and spicecake to the flavor presentation. There is also a soft spiciness that is somewhat reminiscent of cinnamon red hots. The finish is long with a dry and tannic ending. A contemplative and introspective reposado. -
Fresh agave nose with a hint of smoke, mint, young leather and marshmallow. The flavor entry is superb, with a round, creamy and lightly peppered character. Notes of green pepper, saline, wood tannins and a hint of eucalyptus percolate over the tongue. A very long finish leaving a yearning for another expressive sip or two. Really a stunner of a young tequila.

Heady nose of caramel and vanilla leading the parade. Light entry that quickly transforms into a sweet and lightly oaked flavor bomb. A somewhat chewy mouthfeel, with warm, round, near creamy notes on the palate. Interestingly, there is a modicum of peppery spice here, which lingers long on the tongue. This may be due to the slightly higher ABV. Overall, a perfect palette for creative cocktails, or enjoying over a few rocks to share some Irish craic at your next gathering.

Nice lively rye aroma in the glass. Dark oak and young tobacco are also present on the nose. Light body, with a somewhat fruity entry. The rye spice is initially mellow, but picks up speed over as the tasting opens up. A fine, woody flavor, which is dry, but not overly tannic. The impression is reminiscent of roasted, lightly spiced tree nuts. The finish is medium-long with a slight mintiness at the tail end, with the lasting impression being of an easy going, friendly spirit ideal for mixing in cocktails. A welcome addition to the Powers portfolio.

Light woodiness greets the nose with a hint of vanilla. The palate presents a smooth entry, with a strong oak character following, succeeded by dessert-like notes of toffee, salted caramel, vanilla bean, and espresso. This all comes back together in a rush at the end, with the cask staves leaving a somewhat bitter tannic finish. We'd recommend this as a shot paired with an Irish Stout, or used in a traditional Irish Coffee to add some depth.

Renegade Rum Pre-Cask Single Farm Origin: Nursery (Upper La Calome/Yellow Lady)
Other Sugarcane — Grenada
Reviewed February 23, 2023A light and soft cane juice nose. On the palate, it also has a lighter feel. More delicate and less aggressive than the Lower Crater Lake South expression, Nursery has a warmer, sunnier and friendlier disposition. This is also slightly sweeter, with notes of marshmallow, milk bread, and confectioner’s sugar. This is a great rum for a Daiquiri or a Mojito, but also a relaxed sipper by itself. -
Renegade Rum Pre-Cask Single Farm Origin: Lake Antoine (Lower Crater Lake South/Purple Tallboy)
Other Sugarcane — Grenada
Reviewed February 23, 2023Vibrant cane nose with a lively freshness. A lot of low end on the palate, with a deep root-like character that at the same time has a vegetal brightness. Very grassy and almost chewy in mouthfeel. Tightly compact, peppery and surprisingly woody with a very long finish. This is a unique rum that in some ways reminds us of a mild Islay Scotch. A contemplative sipping rum. -
Method and Madness Single Pot Still Finished in Chestnut Casks
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed February 23, 2023 (edited July 16, 2023)Slightly dark penumbra on the nose, and yes, a chestnut sensibility. Nutty, with the malt in the background. A lovely tasting with orange blossom, crushed roasted hazelnut, soft baking spice, brown bread, Devon cream, mild tea and graham cracker. Spectacular flavor and a smooth, round mouthfeel. A long finish, ending on a hint of young wood. Highly recommended. -
Method and Madness Single Malt Enhanced With French Oak Casks
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed February 23, 2023 (edited July 16, 2023)Tight, high and slightly heathery nose. Very much in line with what we expect from an Irish, some citrus, a lot of sweet malt, rich caramel, toffee, cocoa, brioche and even a bit of saline. No surprises here, and that's a good thing. An extremely tasty and well done spirit. Bring a case of this one to a desert island.
