Highland Park 12 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 10, 2015 (edited August 5, 2017)I'll give this one the benefit of the doubt. I like this scotch. It's sweet and smooth, yet it lacks the bite that I enjoy from bourbon barrel aging, or whiskies with higher proof. What I really do enjoy about this dram is the slow development of flavor over the course of a few seconds. The flavors don't hit you all at once, starting with soft caramels and developing into rich dark fruits. More smoke than a starter Highland/Speyside, and less than an Islay. I haven't tried any of HP over the 12 year, so I'll leave my mark as is ... for now! -
Aberlour 16 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed June 23, 2015 (edited August 5, 2017)Slight hint of smoke on the nose. Light, grassy, sweet vanilla palate. Nice lingering spice in the finish. Not a very complex dram, and lacks a good punch. The length of time in the barrels plus the 80 proof content hurts the potential of this dram. I would have it again, but would avoid it as a purchase. -
Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 30, 2015 (edited June 15, 2017)Heavy but not overbearing. Sits well on the tongue and exemplifies classic bourbon traits. Vanilla, cherry, licorice, and spice. Pleasant and somewhat floral on the nose. On the way down there is some character that the small batch lacked. Spice, love the spice. My trouble with most bourbons is that most of what I've tried haven't really stood out from the rest, but I would have to say this a good bottle to become acquainted with :D -
Very similar profile to the Tyrconnell and Tullamore Dew. Sweet candied vanilla and a fruity palate. Sour apple, and less on banana. The finish feels grassy, oily, and a little bitter where the sweetness lingers just a tad longer. There is a burn on the tongue afterward. It has interesting complexity, and has the potential to stand out amongst more well known products. Worth trying out.

Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 19, 2015 (edited August 5, 2017)All scotch is good scotch (unless it's terrible). The Mac 12 is sweet, smooth, tannic, and has just that right amount of sherry influence to make this a crowd pleaser. Slight smoke, and a swift oaky finish. I do enjoy some more robust whiskey over this, but if readily available or given as a gift, this is great stuff. I wouldn't pay anything over 60$ for this. -
Classic bourbon traits, but not really amazed. Slight Amber color, sweet floral nose. Tastes like other vanilla caramel bourbons, and contains a familiar licorice aftertaste. There's something like a rotten cherry twizzler monster that you have to combat into the finish, but pleasantly spicy and sharp. Oh, and cinnamon too. Comparatively, there are better options out there. Glad I ordered a glass instead of buying a bottle.
