Reviewed August 18, 2020 (edited November 5, 2020)2 of 3 of a sample pack, 43 abv. There’s a decided vegetal, earthy peat note, with salty brine and sweet malt. Medium finish is warming and a little peppery. -
Jura Origin 10 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed August 18, 2020 (edited August 24, 2020)1 of 3 of a sample pack of the 43 abv version. I like it, it’s got orchard fruit and honey, some mixed nuts, a little oily, with a warming medium finish. -
Beam's Choice 8 Year Mozart Decanter
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 13, 2020 (edited August 28, 2020)I got a small sample of this 1974 vintage Beam’s Choice from a buddy. It came from an unopened decanter exactly like the one pictured here. I was pretty excited to taste something distilled the same year I was born. I’m a little surprised that it has survived all this time in a ceramic decanter with a screw top plastic cap. How’s it taste? It smells and tastes like typical Beam with peanut funk and corn, but quite light with no harsh notes, kind of silky on the palate, and the medium finish is very pleasant. I would say time has been good to this whiskey. -
Barrell Rum Tale of Two Islands
Aged Rum — (bottled in) Kentucky, Jamaica
Reviewed August 8, 2020 (edited August 28, 2020)Powerful hogo and fruit on the nose. The proof is overpowering to me. A teaspoon of water brought it down to a level I could drink. The palate still has plenty of hogo and sharp fruity notes mixed with hint of peat. The finish is sweet and medium length. Empty glass smells better than the rum itself. This is cool for the novelty. Happy to have a bottle, but I will not seek out another. -
Warbringer Mesquite Smoked Southwest Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in) California , USA
Reviewed August 8, 2020 (edited August 10, 2020)Pleasing nose of smokey bananas foster mixed with corn syrup and Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce dripping onto hot mesquite charcoal briquettes. Similar notes tantalize the palate while the ethanol is a little biting. The finish is long, sweet and smokey, while leaving a prickly sensation on the tongue and cheeks. -
Westward American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Oregon, USA
Reviewed July 29, 2020 (edited October 8, 2022)Bottle kill/drain dump review. Shared with a group of friends (socially distanced of course) about a week after opening. It was one of their favorites out of a flight of 6 American whiskies and I didn’t mind it terribly. Shared again last weekend with a different group and it was absolute least favorite. This bottle was only open about 6 weeks and the stinky, yeasty note just got more and more pronounced. Dumped the last 1/8th bottle down the drain. Guess the morale of the story is to drink it quickly if you get a bottle. -
Stagg Jr Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch 13
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed July 28, 2020 (edited October 14, 2020)Wow, really feel the abv on this one. First sip burned all the way to my stomach. After I added a healthy dose of water I still feel the heat but liked it much better. Notes of cherries, oak, brown sugar, toffee and some astringency. Long finish. -
Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 24, 2020 (edited August 3, 2020)Fantastic! Chocolate bread, vanilla, rye, baking spices and a hint of cinnamon. Best thing is none of the eucalyptus or mint notes, which I generally get with rye whiskies and don’t enjoy. Looong spicy finish.
