Maker's Mark Cask Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 20, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Poured my first taste after a full Thanksgiving lunch. Added only 1 ice cube. Nose was astringent with alcohol and heat. First taste was full of burn. After letting sit for a few more minutes, it was smooth and sweet with strong vanilla cream and syrup. Finished with enough heat to offset the sweetness. Really enjoyable. Can't wait for the temperature to drop some more. -
Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 20, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)An enjoyable high ABV sipping bourbon - neat. A good classic bourbon nose with initial sweetness. Long finish with heavy oak and cedar. Am going to try it with a cigar. UPDATE - goes perfect with a Rocky Patel Edge cigar. -
Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 20, 2017 (edited September 12, 2017)I like high proof bourbons. This one is very good with all the typical bourbon characteristics. However, the first taste worried me. It was bitter, woody with the high proof burn. However, the subsequent tastes were smooth and classic bourbon, vanilla, creme brule/burnt sugar. The finish is spicy and like potato chips, can't just have one. Enjoyable especially with a Rocky Patel Edge cigar. -
Old Grand-Dad 114 Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 20, 2017 (edited October 14, 2017)This is one of those whiskeys that I like enough to drink regularly but will drink it often because of the price. It's hot because of the proof but not objectionably. Typical bourbon with burnt sugar, vanilla but the high rye spices it up considerably. Long finish and after the first one calls you back for more. -
TX Blended Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in) Texas, USA
Reviewed June 17, 2016 (edited January 20, 2017)My favorite non-bourbon low proof whiskey. Sweet and easy to drink. I think it is too mellow for cocktails but then I prefer neat. The only reason I didn't give it a 4th star is that I'm partial to high proof whiskey. -
Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 17, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)The first taste is kind of astringent (maybe wood resin), but after that it's a very nice bourbon. Like the finish, spicy that brings you back for more. Not sure I'll buy again. I am going to try the 10 yr though. -
First off, the "12" isn't on the front label any more. It is on the back in small print. Took a taste neat then with 1 ice cube. Adding the ice definitely opened it up. Light nose of vanilla, peanut brittle, cream. The first taste neat was harsh but not objectionable. With ice, the second and remaining tastes were very nice with all the vanilla, cream brulee, scorched sugar flavors apparent. Long finish that warmed all the way down. For the money, an outstanding bourbon.

Angel's Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 17, 2016 (edited October 4, 2017)While I enjoyed this bourbon, I don't understand all the fuss. It was good but not exceptional at anything. Smooth, kind of oily, very thin finish. Bought a bottle for a Christmas party and just finished it the other day. Doubt if I'll buy again.
