Ardbeg Corryvreckan
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed September 19, 2016 (edited January 8, 2018)The last of six I tasted at a whisky festival in Belgium. Well prepped for the alcohol and smoke, I mostly get dark fruity sweetness (think blueberry/blackberry), peat, and espresso. And of course a whole pandemonium of smoke, ash and brine. A whisky that's definitely as deep and intense as its namesake. -
Glenmorangie Signet
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 18, 2016 (edited March 28, 2019)Ever had one of those moments where you enjoyed your life so much that you feel a bit sad when that moment ends? That's what drinking this whisky evokes. You could describe this whisky with notes like mocha, espresso, orange zest, and other flattering descriptions. But it will never encompass how fantastic this whisky is. Pairs well with soothing and harmonic music, like the Miserere from Gregoria Allegri. -
Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 18, 2016 (edited November 15, 2017)Sweet, warm winter spices, primarily cinnamon and nutmeg. One for the holidays while your kids unwrap their presents (and you drink yours). -
Glenfiddich 15 Year Solera Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 22, 2016 (edited April 20, 2018)Aficionados like ourselves are inclined to dislike mass-produced whiskies like Jack Daniels and Johnnie Walker. I felt the same way with Glenfiddich, especially after trying the 12 YO. “Another product without nuance, made without tradition or passion.” After visiting the distillery, I have to admit I couldn’t be further from the truth. Aside from malting, they still do everything like they did when they first started. They even have their own coopers and spirit safe operator. Additionally, they try all kinds of crazy stuff with casks and maturation to stay ahead in the game, one of which is this 15 YO Solera Cask. So, my deepest respect to Glenfiddich; their popularity is more than deserved. As for this whisky, my favorite of the four I've tasted at the distillery (others being the 12 and 18 year old and the Original): I can’t recall specific notes, but I remember that it’s deliciously fruity, a bit floral, sweet, and has a lovely finish. I will definitely buy a bottle sometime soon. -
Perhaps this is more suited for colder days, even though the weather isn't particularly great in Huntly, Scotland. This dram is predominantly earthy, peaty and smoky. I really miss the slight sweetness and fruitiness that make Laphroaig and the like so complex and enjoyable. Perhaps some water would reveal these subtleties, but neat, I'm not ordering this again until I need snow boots to get to the bar.
