Old Carter 12 Year American Whiskey Batch 2 (2019 Release)
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed October 30, 2022Tremendous. Even at the 131 proof, this had very little ethanol on the nose. Full palate and long finish. Would love to find a bottle so glad was able to have a pour at CVG -
Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey (114 Proof)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 16, 2022 (edited August 23, 2023)On the nose, this seems closer to a bourbon than a rye. Very light sweet flavoring and a bit of ethanol. It’s the weakest part of the offering. Taste: for the proof this one doesn’t bite. Again, more bourbon like than rye it does reminds me of OGD 114 which stands to reason. Some sweetness with not a lot rye on the taste which makes me wonder if the MB just tips in at around 51% rye. Finish is medium and warming. It is a tad dry and has a bit of spice here. If you like OGD114 I think you’d enjoy this, however OGD114 is the better of the two.38.0 USD per Bottle -
Maker's Mark 46 French Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 12, 2022 (edited October 27, 2022)First pour it two I was not a fan, but over time I’ve started to enjoy. I must say I’m typically not a huge fan of finish whiskey from the get go, but this one has grown on me a bit. I really get some nice caramel off the nose and taste and it’s not so overly sweet from the finish that it’s a turnoff. Not necessarily one I’d buy again, but it’s moving up in my rankings so that’s not a bad thing.35.0 USD per Bottle -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 12, 2022 (edited October 25, 2022)Nose is not bad but not exciting. Tough to draw any distinguishing notes. I get nothing much off of the taste and the finish is short to medium. I really, have no idea why people rave on this. Just because it’s $30 and 10 yr doesn’t make it a great bourbon a great buy. It’s frankly not very good and you are better off buying Wild Turkey 101 for a MUCH BETTER bourbon at $10 cheaper. Ironically, the red label RR is outstanding. This bottle that is 1/2 gone and I have the same takeaway every single time is simple not very good. Quit hyping this.29.0 USD per Bottle -
Little Book Chapter 6: To the Finish
Blended American Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 12, 2022 (edited October 24, 2022)Very mild nose. Had a hard time picking a nose. I get an Apple note, but having a tough time picking up much more than that. Maybe a touch of raison. Zero ethanol which is great for a 117 proofer. Taste is very good, but it’s lacking and brings down the overall experience for what could have been an outstanding bottle down to very good. Had a hard time drawing out distinguishing notes on the taste. No regrets on the buy and will taste again soon. Finish is outstanding…warming and long. A bit of a tea note coming through.120.0 USD per Bottle -
Kirkland Single Barrel Reserve Kentucky Bourbon by Barton 1792
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 12, 2022 (edited March 22, 2023)Pleasant nose…not astringent for a 120 proof. Get a nice sweet tobacco note. A bit of caramel as well. A whiff of peanut. On the taste is is a little hot and doesn’t fully follow the nose. Not bad on taste, but a let down from the nose Finish is medium to long with a nice warming . Spicy and peppery. Definitely better than the BiB. For $30 a 1L it’s hard to beat on value.30.0 USD per Bottle -
I am not a fan of the standard Belle Meade offering. Just really not good. So was hoping this would be better. It is better but honestly it’s just a pour of proof. Not a lot on the nose or taste and a lot of proof on the back end. Best thing is it is a long finish more from the warmth than anything. Just disappointing.55.0 USD per Bottle
