Catoctin Creek 1757 Virginia Brandy
American Brandy — Virginia, USA
Reviewed February 20, 2019 (edited December 22, 2020)Wait, I’m the first one to rate this? Wait, Catoctin Creek makes brandy? I stopped into the distillery recently for a taste and I really enjoyed it so a bottle came home with me. I’m very new to brandy/Cognac but this one stands up to any of the VSOPs I’ve tried. Nice warming sip with a touch of sweetness. Dried fruit. Caramel. Roasted nuts? Hmm. -
Strong kettle-corn nose that definitely follows through in the flavor. Very sweet but not over the top. Body is light and extremely smooth, especially considering the slightly-elevated proof. I really enjoyed this; in my opinion it’s just a a bit too expensive though as the price puts it in direct line with many more complex and edgy bourbons.

First chance to try a Pappy. Overall I enjoyed it but I’m still waiting to come across one of their older expressions. Some sweetness and oak. Had this with one large ice cube. Some initial burn but that disappeared as the melting began. $38 for the pour - glad I experienced it but I don’t need to try this one again.

First chance to try a Pappy. So they say the 12 isn’t really good enough to age any longer. I guess that just means I need to keep watching for the older ones! I‘m not sure this one lives up to the Pappy mystique but I really enjoyed it. Some sweetness and oak. I had this pour with one large ice cube; there was some initial burn but that disappeared once a bit of melting started. $38 for the pour was worth the experience once though!38.0 USD per Pour

Hard to zero in on the aroma; there’s a lot of alcohol stinging my nose. Quite whiskey-ish. Tastes like caramel and dried apricots along with a little salty burn. I’m still getting used to cognac so I’m not sure how this stacks up but it does seem a bit less smooth and lush than I’d expected. Overall I like it but I think this is a gateway drug to something better.

Speyburn 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 13, 2017 (edited October 22, 2019)Tried this with a bit of water. Pretty darn good for the price. The nose is distinctly citrus. The sip is a little sweet and very soft, but the finish seems to be all burn, and it lingers for quite a while. Maybe this is expected at 86 proof at this price, but then again I can’t think of another 10-year single malt at this price. Does $30-ish buy a better blend? Probably. Does it buy a better single malt? I doubt it. I’ll have to try it with an ice cube.
