Deanston Virgin Oak
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2019 (edited March 7, 2020)I'll buy this again. It's one of the lower priced selections on my local liquor store's Single Malt shelves. It doesn't match up with my favorites, but it's quite drinkable. I do taste the cinnamon after a few seconds on my tongue. The fruitiness hits the back of my throat in a pleasant way. It's fine - I recommend it if your $$ is tight. Even if it isn't, it's a decent Single Malt. Purchased at a NH State liquor store, 11-201930.0 USD per Bottle -
Love the (natural?) color - looks like a light brown ale Nose is a combination of caramel/toffee, unknown pleasant fruit, a touch of smoke - so far so good Initial taste is sweet but not cloying, a bit of a pepper burn. Give it a few seconds and the peaty smoke emerges, a bit more than subtle but certainly not ashtray-overpowering. A waft of alcohol vapors as it goes down. No complexity in the finish - the sweetness disappears for the most part except for a dash sticking to the upper palette. Strange: After I wrote the above I was leafing through Distiller (critical research of course!) and I absently took a healthy sip after letting the pour sit for a few minutes. It pretty much bypassed my tongue (so I got no pepper) and went straight into the back of my throat. It tasted like a spoonful of slightly ashed sugar going down - just wonderful. Now I'm left with a pleasing fruity aftertaste. I'm raising my rating. Yup, after letting it breathe for a few minutes it jumped from a B- to a B+ in my book. Really a 3.875 Purchased in NH after reading https://blog.distiller.com/peated-sherry-cask/72.0 USD per Bottle

A preponderance of alcohol in the nose; I'm giving myself a head rush. Melds into mineral spirits, with a hint of fruit/honey and sulphur. Overall, not pleasant. Initially fruity to the taste. The pepper kicks in after a few seconds and stays throughout. The taste is of imitation fruit, chemical-ly. The aftertaste leaves quickly except for a slightly queasy feeling. This bottle loses it's place in the collection, relegated to the back cabinet for mixed drinks.44.0 USD per Bottle

Glenfiddich 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 24, 2019 (edited October 1, 2019)I gave this a taste while eating Chinese Food - certainly drinkable, sweet rather than peaty. I enjoyed it, and will take this over Glenlivet at bars having only 1 or 2 single malt scotch selections. Tasted at Green Tea restaurant, Rte 1 south, Peabody MA8.0 USD per Shot -
Harsh, so many are better. That was uninformed, in-a-hurry papollo talking. I've had a chance to settle down and properly sip this selection, and I am so glad I did. This is awesome. Sweet, peaty, peppery, so many more tastes I can't yet verbalize....this shoots to near the top of my (short) list of single malts I've tried and want more.50.0 USD per Bottle
