Really rich and complex. Yoichi is one of the only distilleries that still uses coal, so there's a very earthy flavor to this, in addition to the fruity sweet. A real gem. I've tried their 10 yr old and 15...the 10 has more fruit forward while the 15 is more earthy. Now that Nikka has announced they'll stop making age statements, I can't image the 15 to be in the market for long. Wondering if Suntory will go that route too...getting noticeably harder to find the Yamazaki 18.

Brenne French Single Malt Whisky
Single Malt — France
Reviewed June 12, 2015 (edited April 20, 2017)Not sure if I should give this to my wife as a perfume, or drink it. The nose is quite floral, almost like roses and cotton candy. I keep coming back for the aroma. Taste is so-so....but I really love this scent. Really a different style. I think it's perfect for summer actually---not sure I'd want to be sipping a peaty Lagavulin in 90 degrees, but this I don't mind. Alison Patel's creation is definitely unique. -
Compass Box Great King St Glasgow Blend
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed June 5, 2015 (edited March 9, 2021)Another excellent blend by John Glaser. The first whiff is smoke and fruit, taste becomes sweeter, but the finish is long and smoky. Really a great buy considering the price. You'd pay more for an equally good single malt. -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 3, 2015 (edited April 29, 2017)This is quite drinkable...dangerously so. Without ice, it's got a sweet vanilla aroma, and equally followed by an oak-vanilla flavor. Finish is long and spicy. With ice, I found it overly spicy, muted the oak-vanilla flavor. If you can handle the ABV, without ice is the way to go. Just a few drops of water will do---it'll open up the aroma and flavor. -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 21, 2015 (edited September 15, 2015)A solid choice for the price---really can't go wrong considering it hits the sweet spot of availability, price, and taste. Has all the key elemental aromas and taste of a good bourbon. It's pretty strong though---maybe not as chest-hair-growing-stong like Booker's , but right up there...needs ice or water to tame it. -
Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 26, 2015 (edited July 30, 2017)This is definitely the entry level high quality single malt. Granted..nowadays you can find better for the price though, and the Macallan 12 isn't what it used to be. Regardless, it's still got the three pillars that make it an easy B+ to A- grade: easy accessibility, relatively affordable price point, and Macallan adherence to quality. -
Bernheim 7 Year Original Wheat Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 20, 2015 (edited October 8, 2016)My first wheat whiskey. Definitely smoother and gentler than the traditional corn or rye based, but not as complex or full of character as some of the barley based single malts. Overall, a really easy sipping, great for a lazy hot Saturday afternoon. Really can't go wrong for the price either---just over $35.
