Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 3, 2015 (edited April 29, 2017)This is quite drinkable...dangerously so. Without ice, it's got a sweet vanilla aroma, and equally followed by an oak-vanilla flavor. Finish is long and spicy. With ice, I found it overly spicy, muted the oak-vanilla flavor. If you can handle the ABV, without ice is the way to go. Just a few drops of water will do---it'll open up the aroma and flavor. -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 21, 2015 (edited September 15, 2015)A solid choice for the price---really can't go wrong considering it hits the sweet spot of availability, price, and taste. Has all the key elemental aromas and taste of a good bourbon. It's pretty strong though---maybe not as chest-hair-growing-stong like Booker's , but right up there...needs ice or water to tame it. -
Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 26, 2015 (edited July 30, 2017)This is definitely the entry level high quality single malt. Granted..nowadays you can find better for the price though, and the Macallan 12 isn't what it used to be. Regardless, it's still got the three pillars that make it an easy B+ to A- grade: easy accessibility, relatively affordable price point, and Macallan adherence to quality. -
Bernheim 7 Year Original Wheat Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 20, 2015 (edited October 8, 2016)My first wheat whiskey. Definitely smoother and gentler than the traditional corn or rye based, but not as complex or full of character as some of the barley based single malts. Overall, a really easy sipping, great for a lazy hot Saturday afternoon. Really can't go wrong for the price either---just over $35. -
Compass Box Oak Cross
Blended Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 18, 2015 (edited February 18, 2020)Incredib.y smooth. Nose is almost like bourbon, but the palette is unmistakedly whisky. Another great blend from Compass Box -
Glen Garioch Founder's Reserve
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed April 5, 2015 (edited August 1, 2020)From what I read somewhere, this is about 8 yr old. If that's the case, it's really not bad considering the youth. There's strong floral and sweet notes, followed by honey sweetness and crisp lemon on the palette. Finish is smooth and quick. Personally, I liked it with ice... Does bring out a bit more herbal flavors. Not bad for the price. You probably can do better at the same price range if you go into blends though---- most notably the Compass Box Artist blend comes to mind -
This is really good under-rated buy. Creamy, full of body, with initial sweetness followed by oak. Easy drinking, not too complex. You really can't go,wrong for the price (just over $30 I think). It's almost like a Balvenie 12 junior.... Lacks the same depth and complexity but just as smooth and easy
