Ron Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum
Aged Rum — Venezuela
Reviewed September 23, 2017 (edited January 12, 2018)Only 2 Rums left on my "rated but not yet written a note" list. Then I can go on to new stuff. Thankfully, both are awesome Rums. This baby here is at the moment my personal top Rum. Discovered it by accident, I ordered a Ron Zacapa, but they had none left, and offered me this instead. Glad they did. On the Nose you immediatly get intense raisins, dark dried fruits, plums, honey, cinnamon and a hint of citrus. Taste is sweet, but not too sweet. I prefer my rums a bit sweeter anyway, so this is perfect, and I really don't care if they add sugar to achieve this taste. You also get honey, plums, spices like cinnamon and other christmas-ish spices. The aftertaste is long, sweet and there is a bit of dried pineapple in there. All in all, top shelf material, and at about 30 bucks a bottle this is gonna be a mainstay of my collection. Word of advice though, they renamed it to Botucal Reserva Exclusiva...couldn't find any Ron Diplomatico anywhere, until I figured that out. -
Might have over estimated this one since it was one of my first. After tasting my way through a few more Bourbons, coming back to this is somewhat...disappointing. On the nose you get honey, spices and a bit of cinnamon. That is actually the most pleasent part of this whiskey. The taste is faint honey, pepper and spices. Rather one note, non of the cherry I usually get in Bourbon. The aftertaste is sweet honey, for a few seconds, and then it's gone. Not a bad Bourbon by any standard, but not a great one either. Still a good candidate for beginners to slowly get into drinking whiskey. Not worth what I paid for it, but you can find it for a decent price. Worth having a bottle available just in case.

Bulleit Rye
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Kentucky), USA
Reviewed September 22, 2017 (edited January 12, 2018)The nose surprised me. Fresh mint, spices, eucalyptus, tough of honey maybe...something sweet in the background. Taste reminds me of sweet cereals, some honey, spices, light hints of fruits, black licorice. The aftertaste is fast and sweet. All in all, good Rye. For the price definatly my go to Rye Whiskey. -
Blanton's Special Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 22, 2017 (edited February 20, 2018)Bourbon time. On the nose I get a ton of cherry and vanilla. There are some spices in there and a hint of pepper. On the tongue I get bitter oak flavors combined with some sweetness and the typical cherry vanilla. The aftertaste doesn't last very long and is a mix of sugary sweetness and bitter oak. Not my favorite Bourbon, but would probably work nice in an Old Fashioned. Need to try that. -
Cardhu 15 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed September 21, 2017 (edited September 22, 2017)This was the first scotch I tried. I was a bourbon only drinker until I got a bottle of this from my uncle for christmas last year. I really damn liked it back than, and it seems I still like it now. On the nose you get a heavy dose of chocolate, raisins, some plums, cinnamon and slight vanilla. That mostly continues on the taste, with a dash of honey and a bit of pepper. Cinnamon and raisins stay strong, but the light sweet chocolate from the nose turns into a dark bitter chocolate that fits perfect with the lighter, sweeter honey notes. The dark chocolate stays with you, as does a slight hint of gingerbread and raisins. It's a speyside, so peatheads won't have much to explore, but for us who like it a bit sweeter/lighter, but not overly sugary, this is an excelent dram. Whoever sold that bottle to my uncle knew what they were doing. -
Lagavulin 16 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed September 16, 2017 (edited January 12, 2018)Well, was not expecting to drink Lagavulin today. Wanted to get a bottle of Dalmore 12 for the whisky vault livestream (great youtube channel btw), but my store ran out. So I got a bottle of this stuff here instead. Not sure if that was a good idea. The smell is smoke, peat, charcoal. Kinda earthy and with a hint of the salty sea. Also, BBQ. Because I'm hungry. The taste is a load of peat and smoke and bitterness. I really, really hated this at first, but after I've been sipping this for about half an hour now it's kinda growing on me. I get very little sweetness, but there are some pear notes in there, salt, smoked meat, a very weird aftertaste that reminds me of chicken wings. Also, some vanilla. I do get a somewhat minty aftertaste and there is some sweetness. I can't really describe it, but the aftertaste is worth fighting through the peat wall that smashed against your head at the beginning. Still prefer the Laphroaig, but this goes up to the top of my list. -
Roe & Co Blended Irish Whiskey
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed September 14, 2017 (edited December 10, 2017)I really like this one for the days where I just want a nice whiskey to sip on. On the nose I get a ton of honey and butter biscuits (shortbread), cinnamon and vanilla. Most of that follows to the taste, mixed with raisins, sweet apples, pears, vanilla custard and buttery goodness. Slight, pleasent burn and long aftertaste of buttered biscuits with honey. Not a whiskey for peatheads, but perfect to sip while reading a good book or enjoying a movie. -
Highland Park 12 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed September 14, 2017 (edited October 11, 2017)A classic single malt. Light peat on the nose, combined with honey and a pinch of citrus. On the taste we get the sweet honey combined with charcoal, a fruity peach, bitter herbes and some salt. It has quite a bit of burn for only 40%, not a fan of that. The taste is good, it's a whisky I like to come back to every now and then, but not up there with my favorites. Still earns the 4 stars. -
This was my first and so far only japanese whisky. Had the chance to try it while at a Ramen shop with some friends (if you're in vienna, check out Karma Ramen, good food and a handful of nice japanese whiskys). On the nose I get a hint of vanilla, a lot of dried plums, dates and some figs, all with honey and buttery notes. The taste is again honey, dried fruits (still get a lot of plums here), some herbs, slight banana and some spicyness that I assume could be oak. The sweetness stays with you and just gives you a satisfied feeling. If this is any indication for japanese whiskys, I'm in for a ride. Glad I could get my hands on a bottle. Definatly recommend this.

Knob Creek Small Batch Bourbon (NAS)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 10, 2017 (edited March 8, 2018)Ok, Bourbon time. On the nose I get corn, slight oranges, and a brown sugar/cinnamon mix. Not much alcohol in the nose despite being 100 proof. Less sweet than most bourbons I had so far. Pleasent pepper notes, caramell...cinnamon rolls glazed with molten butter. Oak. No burn whatsoever. Lingering oak and moderate sweetness that stay quite a long time. Did not expect this, by far my favorite Bourbon so far. That goes on my top shelf.
