Old Carter Straight Bourbon Batch 5 (2020 Release)
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2020 (edited December 24, 2020)I really enjoyed this. It is spicey and sweet. If you want peanut brittle flavor in your bourbon then this one is NOT for you. I preferred it neat rather than with a drop of water or on a big cube. I’ve now had the Old Carter American Batch 3, the Bourbon Batch 5 and the Rye Batch 4. I really liked them all - in that order of preference. I hate to admit it, but I’m turning into a fan of this (well) sourced whiskey. The price for any of them is high - even at the slightly below MSRP that I was able to pick each up at - but the quality is really good. I read reviews all the time that say a bottle is great, but they can’t justify paying 2x the price of some really good old standby. Personally, I’m getting to the point where I’d rather drink less of something ‘great’ than buy two bottles of something ‘good’. Probably a healthier choice too! 😎 -
I opened this 4 days ago and my initial impression was “what a waste of money!” It was nothing but oak on the palate and the finish was tight and astringent. But each day I revisited it and it got better. Now after 4 days and just below the shoulder, it is a whiskey transformed. Still a fair amount of oak, but now there is a lot more on offer. Still not sure it was worth the price ($160) but it is a very solid bourbon.

I just finished off my bottles of No Name 1 & 2, both of which I really enjoyed. I have to say I like this better - it’s more subtle and intriguing than those. I almost passed on this bottle due to the price point ($149), but I’m glad I decided to get it. It will be interesting to see how this develops over time. Not sure I’d recommend that people rush out to get it, but if you have room in your budget and on your shelf then i don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Smooth and very easy drinking. Nice flavor profile of fruity/sweet. Not much of a challenge here- but frankly sometimes a clean, refreshing whiskey that gets down easy it just what you want. It doesn’t happen all that often for me, but when I’m in that frame of mind, this will fit the bill. I’m glad to have received it as a gift - it will fill a niche in my whiskey cabinet that was missing.

Compass Box Flaming Heart 2012 (4th Edition)

Compass Box Tobias & The Angel
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed April 12, 2020 (edited March 27, 2021)I received this wonderful bottle as a birthday gift from my 3 brothers and my 2 sons. I only had one wee dram since I promised to hold the majority of the bottle until we can enjoy it together, but my first impression was that this is an amazing whiskey - so smooth with an almost magical blending of floral, sweet, and light peat flavors. It immediately has earned a spot on my top shelf and I cannot wait to revisit it again when the shelter in place is behind us and we can once again gather with good friends and family. I am an unabashed fan of Compass Box and this easily outranks 3 Year Old,Circus, and the 2012 Flaming Heart (which had been my favorite CBW). -

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye (Fall 2014)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 30, 2019 (edited May 24, 2020)Had been sitting on this bottle for several years, finally opened it with friends over the holidays - two of whom love TH over any other whiskey. Now I know what all the hype is about - so sweet with just the right amount of spice & heat and a finish that just went on and on. Tried it with a couple drops of water as well but frankly all three of us preferred it neat.
