This'd be five star, save for the comparison to the 114. It's got everything that the 114 has going for it, but with less. For a 14 proof drop, it loses a lot of character. The nose is bold, creamy and nutty, and the palate has a nice sweet spread, but I'd never choose a bottle of this over the 114, it's just being penny wise and pound foolish for what you are losing.

TINCUP American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Colorado), USA
Reviewed December 26, 2014 (edited January 17, 2015)Grassy and mysterious, Tin Cup is an interesting Whiskey. The corn is not perhaps as pristine as the corn from Heaven Hill, or Robust as the corn from Buffalo Trace, but it seems well kept and well met, and it does not distinctly detract from the quality in any noticeable way. Contrary to what others have claimed, the rye hits you right out of the gate and is unmistakable. Of note is the interesting distinctive color, I don't think I've seen a whiskey this particular shade before. Almost a little green; fitting then, as I expect that this whiskey's better years are ahead of it. Still, a refreshing and distinctive entry, and one that will stick with me, even if I'm not reaching for the bottle for a while. Part of me is curious to see what MGP could do with Canadian Rye, for their mash, instead of where ever they source their rye from, I'd wager the flavor profile would change significantly, perhaps for the better. -
Still a great Bourbon, but in my opinion, inferior to Old Weller Antique 107. It's got a great nose, far more subtle than the antique, but less rewarding, with the same syrupy, candy shop, bakery profile. just toned down a little. The palate is lacking that "yip" I crave from the Antique 107, but the flavors are satisfying and consistent with the rest of the line. Some of the best of the best, and I'd never be without it, still, I feel that the Antique 107 edges it out in terms of potency, and overall personality. My mouth gives this a 9 out of ten!

Mellow Corn Bottled in Bond Whiskey
Corn — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 24, 2014 (edited October 16, 2017)Fantastic Reference Whiskey. Hard to mistake the influence of corn on a mashbill after trying this one. At four years of age and 100 proof, it represents good value. Braver souls might play with blending this and other spirits. Palate is buttery sweet corn. The corn here is some of the cleanest I've experienced in a Whiskey, I guess when less is going on in the juice, they can really optimize the quality. Nothing but the ideal corn note, but sometimes that's all you want. -
Bernheim 7 Year Original Wheat Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 24, 2014 (edited February 10, 2015)Smooth and Sweet, this Whiskey lacks oomph. You can really run a magnifing lens over what the Wheat Brings to the mashbill. Palate has Vanilla Pudding, almost like tapioca, and a faint honey note. The nose is well finished but ephemeral, hinting at what this could become with a little more time in the barrel. This is pleasant and delicate, yet could be more assertive. It is reminicent of an Irish Whiskey, in its light, unobtrusive profile. -
Weller Antique 107 Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 23, 2014 (edited February 19, 2015)This is unique among the Bourbon I've tried for two reasons: First, The nose has the most openly rewarding easiest profiles of anything. Buttery, Brown Sugar, Molasses,Mapley, Oaky, Strangely no leather, Just amazing. The palate has a unique zing, with the sweetest pour I'd ever had. This might be my favorite, I'll Always have a bottle of this on hand. Between the juice and the barrel, this is a small miracle created! -
Old Grand-Dad 114 Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 23, 2014 (edited October 27, 2019)Nut brown, rich and syrupy. Such a sweet oak here, with caramel, vanilla, and a spicy rye note. This is incredibly potent juice. No age statement, but my guess is between 6-8 years. They've hit a real sweet spot with this. At this price point, this represents incredible value for money. I'll be buying a case of this when I have the scratch. One of my favorites! -
Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 21, 2014 (edited March 1, 2015)This Rye Haunts my Dreams. Big warning that this is not for beginners, as this has so much character and personality, assertively put, it may but some off. It is a pickle monster, so keep that in mind. If you aren't into that I'd advise a rye with less, well, rye... If you let this sit and breathe for about 25-45 minutes in a glencairn, it just explodes with flavor in the nose, this somehow effects the palate as well, as the nose is so incredibly powerful. When I say transforms it; it just blossoms with candy shop magic. This is not a "barely legal" rye like Sazerac and Rittenhouse, Instead it's a high rye mashbill that's serious business. Sooo smooth for it's age. I can only imagine what this will be like at 6-8-12 years, might be legendary. Finish is so long I'll be getting glimpses of both the nose and the palate for hours afterwards, sometimes even after meals!
