Little Book Chapter 8: Path Not Taken
Blended American Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 4, 2024 (edited October 5, 2024)Just a rye filled weekend between this and Wild Turkey Triumph. This is classified as blended whiskies, but it is a rye at heart. Beyond a 18 year old Kentucky straight (High rye) bourbon, it is all rye in this mashbill. Grassy rye spice on nose. Some baked apple with cinnamon notes come forward as the whiskey opens up. Palate on this whiskey is crazy. Way more complex then the 10yr Triumph. Cinnamon buns, salted butterscotch, and a lurking herbal note. Lasting finish with more spice and a little carmalized orange. -
Cornerstone was rhe whiskey that got me into Wild Turkey, so I was excited to see another rye-focused Master's Keep Release. 10 year rye (includes up to 12 year) bottled at 104 proof. Dark caramel in glass. Lots of oak and drizzled honey on the nose. Some whiffs of tobacco. Palate is a little thin. Rye spice not extremely pronounced. Some sweetness offset by a bit of lemon. Finish is creamy with lots of pronounced charred oak.

Second release of this 92 proof, 12 year rye - nice value at $55 for aged MGP juice. This batch contains rye aged up to 17 years. Nose is fresh cut grass, caramel, and some whiffs of brown sugar. Palate has some upfront nexpected heat for the low proof. Cinnamon, orange, and oak. Lingering sweet finish shows the age of the rye. Great whiskey for under $60!

Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 121.2
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 10, 2024Oak, vanilla, and brown sugar -
So excited to get my hands on this bottle. Blend of 9, 12, 14, and 15 year old bourbons at barrel proof -120.8. Awesome nose on this: candied cherry (bright red jar of maraschino cherries), caramel, toffee, frosted 🍫 cake. Oily viscous with more pronounced oak than I excpected. Some vanilla and baking spice. Finish is lengthy with more pronounced vanilla and a bit of spicy tobacco. Nearly perfect, just the predominance of oak is the only consideration. Maybe makes this a 4.9 vs. 5.06.0 USD per Bottle
