Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 17, 2014 (edited February 6, 2020)Sweet and light potpourri of candy corn, leather, honey, vanilla and whisps of fresh green apple and walnuts on the nose. Balanced, soft, round and light-bodied with some black pepper spice, leather and then a quick flash of honey/vanilla. A warming finish that leaves the palate pleasantly oaky and slightly dry. A hint of black pepper can be found if you let it rest. Thins out and sweetens with water. Overall, a well balanced wheated bourbon. Great neat if you want soft and oaky/leather. If you want something sweeter, add some ice or water. If you like Makers, than you will love this. It is a bit better and cost-effective. [$29 Lit][88/100][Revisited: 1/26/15 - Blizzard; 11/7/15] -
Glenlivet 12 Year Double Oak
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 16, 2014 (edited August 5, 2017)Light, fruity nose with vanilla, honey and green apple notes, soft and sweet. Oak and cereal notes, malt arrive on the palate with mild tongue burn towards the front. A pleasant, dry and mildly spicy finish that lingers on the palate that fades slightly bitter with a touch of oak. This is the scotch that started me on the single malt journey. A go-to scotch that is always good, anytime, anywhere. Safe, warm and comfortable; like a good friend. [$44][86/100] [Opened: Always] -
Dried straw and cereal notes dominants the nose. Letting breath for a few minutes, the sweeter notes faintly arrive; honey on the nose. The grain is obvious and floats amongst the primary aromas. A small burn slowly creeps on the front on palate, softly, but opens to honey, vanilla and brown sugar. Finishes with the honey, tea and white pepper spice. Add a few cubes, and the dram becomes predominantly sweeter and the graininess is subdued. Definitely more enjoyable with rocks. A nice, clean whiskey, similar in nose to Jameson, but softer and sweeter like Bushmills. [84/100][Tasted 8/4/2014][10/11/15]

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed August 2, 2014 (edited January 7, 2019)Upfront banana notes. Corn syrup and charcoal in the background. Smooth, light texture on the palate. Vanilla and oak with slight burn on the tongue. Short finish. Water softens the banana nose and mellows out on the palate. Better over ice. -
Speyburn 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 27, 2014 (edited February 10, 2020)Cereal, honey, butterscotch and vanilla nose with a fruity, floral aroma all greet the nose. Arrives on the palate, creamy, with orange peel, tea, honey and vanilla notes. Flavors fade leaving the palate with orange zest, a small amount white pepper and burn (43% ABV). Leaves a slightly bitter palate on the finish. As it opens in the glass, it becomes sweeter and a bit softer. A bit of water opens the floral notes and tames the burn. This is a one to keep around for sharing. Young (of course), simple and bright. A good scotch at even a better price. [$29][84/100][Opened: 8/1/2014][Revisited: 5/21/15;12/23/15]29.0 USD per Bottle -
Glenmorangie Lasanta Sherry Cask Finish 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 26, 2014 (edited August 15, 2018)Sherry is clearly evident on the nose. Hints of nuts, dried raisins and dark brown sugar/molasses in the background. Initially sweet on the palate. Cinnamon and nutmeg arrive along with trace amount cereal notes. As it finishes, the spice notes become dominant: black pepper, cinnamon fading leaving a small amount of burn on the tongue. The dark brown sugar notes are the last remnants and as the flavor slowly fades. Water tames the bite and rounds out the sherry with the sweet elements. Definintely more vibrant without water, but rounder with the addition. Prefer with a splash. Overall, this whisky has been hit or miss with me. At times, it has been decent or it has been a disappointment. An inconsistent whisky for me. I did tuck this away for some time and maybe the harshness that I initially found has been reduced and the dram has sweetened and tamed. [$46][84/100][Revisited: 7/25/15;11/8/15]46.0 USD per Bottle -
Came back to this since it's been a while and thought to give it another go. Give it time, as I am better learning, and the aromas of pears, leather, cereal and oranges make the nose. Creamy and full bodied delivers orange zest, vanilla, leather and white pepper. Finishes spicy and slightly vanilla sweet with a touch of drying oak tannins. A teaspoon of water sweetens the dram exposing toffee notes and minimizes the white pepper. A middle of the road whisky that will appeal to the masses. Safe, non-contemplative. In my opinion, falls in line with Glenlivet and the like. For the money, I would rather have Glenlivet 12. Ocean salt first arrives on the nose. Honey-lemon tea and leather shortly follows with a hint of smoke and iodine. Reminds me of a damp day at the beach house. Lightly-bodied that is sweet and smokey, but not as strong as the peaty three (Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin). The lemon tea and honey theme carries over onto the palate, faintly. All that fades to a small amount of smoke, spice and drying oak tannins. The palate is left with a lightly ashy, like just having smoked a mild cigar with a touch of vanilla sweetnes. Less peaty/smokey, sweet Islay malt that is that is reasonably priced and a good segue to the more peaty scotches. Could possibly be improved if bottled at 43% or higher. One for the collection. Damp and dreary evening with Joaquin remnants swirling suits well with this warming dram. Nose is sweet with honey and vanilla tones. Hints of freshly cut ginger root and smoke can be found if your patient. Medium-bodied on the palate wrapped in a rich amber tone. Oak is dominate with ginger root countered with the sweetness of honey sweetness and vanilla. A faint amount of smoke pops in. Drying tannins in the front and lingers on the palate. Long finish with a small amount of burn on the tongue that gradually fades leaving a dry, oaky, black peppery, spicy finish. Water opens the nose bringing out more vanilla and orange? Rounded and smooth with no burn on tongue. The finish flattens out. Prefer without water. [$46][85/100][Revisited: 9/12/14, 10/3/15; 2/25/17]46.0 USD per Bottle
