Talisker 2010 Distillers Edition (Bottled 2020)
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed December 28, 2020 (edited June 14, 2021)Nose: Dense malt, apple, red berries. Cream, soft cherry, oak. A lot more muted than the 10. Taste: denser smoke with intense wine characteristics. Dirty burnt grass, hay. Sherry is helping to amp up the smoke. Light creamy finish with a hint of grapefruit. Nose awakens once you prime yourself with a sip. More almond and cherry notes pop out. The peat starts to subside to a more subtle smokiness and becomes very sweet with toffee and powdered sugar notes. Water makes the malt come out and it becomes very sweet and almondy with the peat punch moving to the end. 10 is more malty and fruity on the taste. Honestly the 10 is more complex but 10 years old is too young, it’s too punchy. Adding water makes it lose its complexity. The distillers edition rounds off the rough edges. It reminds me of uigedal. Definitely need to spend more time with this one but it’s getting up there in terms of my favorites so far.90.0 USD per Bottle -
Ranger Creek Rimfire Mesquite Smoked Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed December 26, 2020Nose: Watermelon that has been left in the garbage for months but also the garbage is on fire. The salted tears of a widow. Light caramel banana. Vanilla ice cream. Taste: Wet cardboard that has been used to dry a dog. The chocolate center of a Tootsie Pop. Dense moldy rye bread. Adding water somehow turns the nose into christmas spice and candy canes, with that fake Christmas flower scent. Taste is still the same except there is more oak and the cardboard taste intensifies. Why does this exist please just get Brimstone instead. -
Deanston 18 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 25, 2020 (edited February 22, 2021)Nose: deep honey and fresh ripe apples and pears with hint of light caramel. Strong citrus notes of a variety of fruits (yuzu, grapefruit, lemon). Malty fruit cake with a hint of raisin. Light zing of a fresh wooded vine. Taste: Heavy malt and sherry upfront with a strong woody backbone. Light floral notes with honey and vanilla. Water is almost required as it solidifies the nose into sweet citrus notes. The taste turns into mild oak and honey with citrus and sharp sherry collapsing into strong floral notes.180.0 USD per Bottle -
Nose: Heavy perfumed malt. lemon grass. apples and intense honey. Light cigar smoke. Taste: intense fruit goes into malt with a strong salt / light peat backing. Finish is an intense honey vanilla. Water brings out some chocolate notes and increases the sweetness but hides all the peat, salt, and other flavors

Cragganmore 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 12, 2020 (edited June 4, 2022)Nose: sweet fruit. vanilla. oak. sweet confectioners sugar. light floral violets. plums, apricots, lime zest. Palette: light going in but then explodes in intense fruit and malt. christmas fruit cake. light caramel almost condensed milk / dulce de leche. vanilla sings through the mid palette and ends in a slight minty finish. maybe some slight chocolate as well with a hint of hazelnuts. very very light trace of citrus as well. Finish also evolves into a grassy earthiness as well. Maybe not as complex as some enthusiasts want but as a nice daily drinker this is way up there. One of the few times I tried a sample bottle of something and thought "I need a full bottle ASAP." Wonderful -
Nose: dense malt, bit of wood polish. ginger bread. dark deep molasses. white chocolate. dill and rye bread. vanilla with light caramel. Taste: dill goes into gingerbread spice with some medium wood notes. finishes with the intense malt / rye bread notes with almost a nutty chocolate finish. Adding water really intensifies the oak and spice / gingerbread notes. Sampled this at a tasting event like a year or two ago and enjoyed it. Finally managed to pickup a full bottle online. TBH other people didn't seem to like it very much. I can see why people complain about the "craft green pine sap" note because this kind of presents itself here as well in a way. I liked it well enough so I guess I either don't get it or actually like the flavor.40.0 USD per Bottle
