Laphroaig An Cuan Mór
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed January 30, 2017 (edited March 1, 2021)One of my favourite Laphroaigs besides the 10 year. Takes what I love about the 10 year and gives it an extra 8% kick which I like. Update: I opened another bottle of this with some friends along with several other bottles and it was for me the favourite of the night. Still I don't rate as high as I used to when I was first starting off with tasting whiskey, I think 4.25 is a fair enough rating. Update 2: The more I work my way through whilst I still like this dram and the pure sweet iodine notes it feels a bit one dimensional in a way. -
Ron Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum
Aged Rum — Venezuela
Reviewed January 30, 2017 (edited October 21, 2024)3 or so years ago this rum started me on my path to straight spirit (now primarily whisky) drinking. At the time I thought I was being offered a port at the tasting session which is why I tried it. I really loved the richness and bought many a bottle. Fast forward a few years and my taste profile has changed. I find it way way to sweet, however given the special place it has in my memory and due to the fact it is a quality rum for the price I'm rating it 4 stars. It would have got 5 a couple of years ago :-) -
Really surprised by this whisky. Longrow is pitched as the peaty oily cousin of the springbank family and up against the Springbank Burgundy, 18, Green and Halzelburn 12 amongst others I tasted on the night it didnt really shine. Very light and subtle. I still did like it but def wouldn't buy a bottle especially for the price. I see from other reviews on line some people have also had the same experience i.e. a completely different flavour profile and style from what is promoted. There seems to be large batch variance year to year

GlenDronach Parliament 21 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 6, 2017 (edited May 10, 2020)Very enjoyable whiskey as most of the Glendronachs are but is it worth the 50% price premium over the 15 or 18 yr. No. Higher abv shows through combined with a general lovely sherry flavour but for me its younger brothers win the day so far. This was based on a 50ml mini bottle though so maybe once I open the big bottle I have and let it sit for a number of months my assessment may change. Update. Ok retasted against Bunnahabhain 18, Glen Balcalta and if they are a four I have to rate a 5 despite the price premium. It is a very good whisky -
Green Spot Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed January 6, 2017 (edited April 19, 2020)Good but not great. I'd give it a 3.5 at a push. Light with a bit of spice. Def needs a higher abv. It's older brother Yellow Spot walks all over this one in terms of richness, mouthfeel, finish and flavour profile. Update: years on and having a few whiskies with mates this was produced. I think i rated to low. Oily, spicy and green caramelised apple. 3.75 and a 4 -
Yellow Spot 12 Year Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed January 6, 2017 (edited May 27, 2020)For me this knocked my other favorite Irish pot still the red breast right off it's perch. Beautiful viscosity and a taste that keeps me swirling the whiskey around and around my mouth before I swallow. The three barrels really each stand out but also blend nicely. You really get the balance between the vanilla of the bourbon, Sherry and the honey sweetness of the malaga. Really love the spice of the black pepper that comes through as well. It does tend to be at the upper limit of what I can bare sweetness wise though. Almost a dessert whiskey. A whisky that after a year open with only a few shots left still tastes great -
GlenDronach Peated
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 6, 2017 (edited November 11, 2017)Quite impressed with this NAS effort. Drank against the Benriach Curiositas and this bested it. Lovely oily mouthfeel and gentle peat vs the thinness of the Benriach. Not in the realm of an Islay but nice and unique all the same -
Really love the iodine and intensity of this whisky. Although only 40% it holds its own against its higher strength brothers such as the An Cuan. The finish and mouth feel isn't quite as long and satisfying against say a Lagavulin 16, but the rich intensity of the peat and flavour more than compensates. I have bought bottles of the An Cuan, PX, Quarter Cask, 15, 18 and the 10 and so far I rate this top Laph favorite along with An Cuan. Would love to see a higher abv though and it may pull ahead. Will look out for a 43% when I'm next in the USA :-)

GlenDronach Original 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 6, 2017 (edited November 26, 2019)I really rate Glendronach and this is no exception. I have had bottles of the 12,15,18 and 21 plus others in the range and although this doesn't best a number of them as its a bit rougher and more sulphuric round the edges once you take the price into account it still deserves top marks. At $50USD a bottle (in NZ) nothing else in the sherry bomb range comes close in terms of value for $. Update: I got another bottle a year later and it was definately a different kettle of fish so to speak. The richness seemed to have disappeared somewhat. I suspect the earlier bottle may have had older whisky in it i.e. it was a pre 2013 bottle (the 12 year was launched in 2009 even though the distillery reopened only in 2001)
