Lone Elm Single Barrel Texas Straight Wheat Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Texas, USA
Reviewed November 12, 2022 (edited October 14, 2023)I picked up another bottle of this one, as it seemed like they’ve been disappearing from local stores. Maybe the secret is getting out. I managed to get this one for only $41 with a coupon. Barrel #746, barreled 2/17, bottled at 61.3 ABV. This one seems different enough from the first barrel I tried that it deserved its own review. On the nose I get sweet wood with a slight smoke. Slightly earthy. Campfire s’mores. The palate is sugar-crusted weathered leather. The first one I tried had more fruit. This one is much more oak forward, more dry, less sweet. Still good and I’ll be a repeat buyer as long as I can find it, but I think I prefer the previous barrel I had. -
Old Forester Single Barrel Bourbon Barrel Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 12, 2022 (edited November 30, 2022)Blind hp bourbon tasting. This one noses quite sweet. More sweet than wood. Decadent. I don’t get any singe on the nose despite the 130+ proof. Cherry, caramel, maybe a slight banana note. Makes me think something Brown Forman. The palate shows more heat than I was expecting from the nose. The first taste is again more fruit. A little sharp. The caramel comes in more on the second pass. Some tannic oak rounds out the finish. It’s good, but I prefer the previous pour of Woodford Reserve… 2nd taste: I saved half the sample and am comparing sbs with the Woodford. The OF is more intense. The oak stands out much more in the sbs. The back end has a nice swell of caramel cherry sweetness before turning the corner to the oaky finish. In the sbs I might actually give the edge to the OF. Tough call here. I’ve gone back and forth and even written out different conclusions more than once. At the moment, I’d give the edge to the OF. The intensity has grabbed me at this tasting, but I could see going the other way in another tasting. Ultimately, both great bourbons. Again, really grateful to @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington for the sample! -
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 123.2
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 12, 2022 (edited November 30, 2022)Blind hp bourbon tasting. On the nose, pecan pie, apricot, apple, orange peel, marshmallow, toasted brown sugar. The high proof is evident on the nose and carries over to the palate, but it’s not overbearing. On the palate I get much of the same. There’s a nice balance between the caramel, fruit and wood. Really quite nice. I have no guess for this one, but it’s one of my faves from this series so far. 2nd taste: I saved half the sample and am comparing sbs with the Old Forester. The Woodford is easier drinking, the proof is lower, the flavors less intense. The wood is in nice balance with the other flavors. I think I’m changing my tune after trying them side by side. I’ve gone back and forth, but ultimately I’m giving a slight edge to the OF. Big thank you to @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington for the sample! So many great bourbons you’ve given me to try. -
Peated cask rum from Balcones. I really enjoy the creativity from the guys there in Waco. Small taste at a friend’s house last night. This was definitely the most interesting thing I tried. I wouldn’t have identified this as a rum on the nose. The flavors are well balanced between the sweetness of the rum, fruit, and funky peat. Hoping to get a proper pour soon and add some more notes.

I believe this is the Harbinger, but finished in red wine casks. Cherry on the nose. The fruit notes are accentuated on the palate. A little bit of the Texas funk and distinct Ironroot flavor comes through. I like this, but I don’t think the wine finish makes for a better whiskey. I think I prefer the Harbinger without.

Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks
Rye — USA
Reviewed November 8, 2022 (edited January 22, 2024)Maple syrup, brown sugar, powdered sugar, granulated sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial vanilla, molasses, heavily dosed rum. This appears to have some kind of flavoring/sweetener additives, and should probably be labeled as liqueur. I would imagine there's a cocktail that this might work for, but I don't tend to drink cocktails. I think this is made for people who like drinking Fireball and want to splurge on something "fancy".
