Lux Row Double Barrel Bourbon 12 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 19, 2020 (edited October 8, 2021)Wow, nose just oozing maple syrup, creme brulee, and cinnamon rolls. There's plenty of oak and allspice there too but it is bakeshop sweet on the nose. Dill and chili pepper stick out more the longer it sits. Smells decadent and hedonistic. Reminds me of a sweeter GTS. Man this just coats the entire mouth and tongue beautifully. Starts with roasted peanuts and cinnamon but quickly turns into rich caramel, bacon, toasted marshmallow, lots of sweet oak, vanilla, and dark chocolate. Warm Kentucky Hug with vanilla, graham crackers, and honey lasting for minutes on the finish. A complete bourbon start to finish. Doesn't have much oak tannins despite its age and its just so rich and mouth coating, its hard to stop drinking it. I had this at 4.75 before I started picking up the bacon note and that just threw it over the top, I had no choice. Short list of top bourbons for me -
Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 10, 2020 (edited January 8, 2021)Strong fruit and wood on the nose. Bananas foster, candied orange peel, oak, and some campfire smoke. Not too much in the way of spice, but a nice sweet cinnamon note provides much needed relief to the sweeter overall profile of this bourbon. Palate is not too thick, but it is quite oily. Lots of fruit wrapped in caramel greet you right away. Orange, raspberry, lemon, and some caramel apple all show brightly on the palate. Enough wood influence on the palate to help balance out all the sweet fruits I am getting. Proof is great and after the first 2 sips I wasn't getting much heat. Finish is moderately long with more fruit, vanilla, and oak lingering for a minute. A sweeter profile for sure. It's not cloying or decadent, it shows some balance, just lacking in much spice. This is one for a sweeter palate for sure though. I really enjoyed sipping on this one and could for hours if given the opportunity. -
Chattanooga Whiskey Cask 111
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 23, 2020 (edited November 11, 2020)Nose is all cinnamon red hots, amber honey, graham crackers, and butterscotch. Quite expressive nose for a young bourbon. More time in the glass reveals layers of milk chocolate and orange. Rich and oily mouthfeel. Lots of toasty marshmallow, dark honey, cinnamon, and sweet tobacco. Finish is medium in length with a light Kentucky hug. Proof is just about perfect for me. Easy to love this whiskey. Its full flavored, great proof, inexpensive, unique, and satisfying. I look forward to drinking more Chattanooga in the future when their stocks gain more age. See what they can do with some older juice.44.0 USD per Bottle -
1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 22, 2020 (edited November 13, 2020)Single barrel from Ace Spirits Nose is all black cherry, red apple, and vanilla with a hint of orange peel on the tail end. Bits of oak and smoke linger but the nose is a fruit bomb. Almost like a Cherry Icee...in a good way. Still a fruit bomb, but banana is most prevalent, as is my and other's experience with Barton juice. There's other sweet flavors here too, mostly caramel and vanilla. These flavors linger for quite some time and coat the tongue well. Hints of cinnamon and white pepper help this from being too sweet. But man, its like bananas foster in a glass. Grab this one for a sweet flavor bomb. I quite love it but it is fairly straightforward which is just fine in my book, as long as the straightforward flavors are enjoyable, and these are quite enjoyable and have very good length45.0 USD per Bottle -
Johnny Drum Private Stock Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 22, 2020 (edited November 13, 2020)Caramel, dill pickle, toffee, red apple, and vanilla on the nose. Palate shows a lot of the same with some more oak and smoke. Burn is up front and dissipates quickly, but it comes back on the finish, which is not so pleasant. Coats the tongue pretty well. Finish ain't bad either. Strong in the dill note but I like it Lacks a ton of complexity and the finish is a little biting, but all in all, I enjoyed this bourbon.33.0 USD per Bottle -
Basil Hayden 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 2, 2020 (edited November 13, 2020)Nose is nice. Vanilla, cherry, charred oak, and some rye. Pretty thin on the palate with flavors of rye, charred oak, and a nice vanilla, caramel on the back end. Finish is medium at best. It's not a bad Whiskey at all, just could be better. I'll grab this for when I want something light and oaky. -
Belle Meade Single Barrel Bourbon 10 Year
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed June 30, 2020 (edited October 28, 2021)Barrel No. 2304 61.15% 122.3 Proof Wow, this is perfection. Nose jumps out of the glass. Gobs of maple, black cherry, oak, vanilla, lemon cookies, and peanut shell. Palate is rich and decadent. Coats the mouth very well. Quickly hits you with oak and cinnamon, but it transitions quickly to caramel and maple syrup. A great ride in the mouth. Lingers for quite some time too. This is about a perfect a bourbon as I've tried. Quite simply, it hits every note. -
Four Gate Batch 4 Split Stave
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 29, 2020 (edited November 12, 2020)Nose is bold but also a little bit restrained, which works for me here. It shows both characteristics of the different oak toasting. Gooey caramel, toasted marshmallow, and coconut from the lighter toast and tobacco, chocolate, and oaky spice from the darker char. Really beautiful stuff here. Palate is rich, creamy, and wonderfully mouth-coating. Lots of the same beautiful flavors from the nose show up here. Pronounced, deep caramel, s'mores, tobacco, and leathery oak. That tobacco and oak carry the finish that is a tad bit dry but very long lasting. What an awesome bourbon. Top marks for ingenuity, craftsmanship, and execution. I wouldn't change a thing about this bourbon. Perfection -
Sam Houston 12 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Release No.1 2018)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 19, 2020 (edited June 20, 2020)Nose strikes a good balance between sweet and spice. Vanilla, black cherry, and toasted marshmallow shine brightest, but underlying aromas of leather, oak, furniture polish, and cinnamon elevate the full aroma. Cherry, caramel, and vanilla up front, then a woodsy smoke character hits you. The smoke soon turns back to sweeter flavors and toasted cereal grains. Smooth but lacking in richness and the finish is just ok. Dissipates somewhat quickly, but leaves a subtle lingering vanilla and oak on the tongue, which is quite enjoyable. I've gotta say, I've wanted to try this since I knew it existed. For no other reason other than I'm a native Houstonian. All I can say is I'm glad I liked it!99.0 USD per Bottle -
Wattie Boone & Sons 7 Year Small Batch American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — USA
Reviewed June 19, 2020 (edited February 12, 2022)Carmel candies, honey, some leather and oak, and a little barnyard funk. Might be off putting to some but I like it. Palate shows honey, baking spice, tart green apple, and sweeter red apple flavors. Light but coats the tongue well. Finish is pleasantly lively. Spice and oak linger with almost no burn
