TINCUP American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Colorado), USA
Reviewed February 12, 2015 (edited September 10, 2019)Decent nose- honey & just a little spice, perhaps like sniffing a cigar. Palate: sweet marshmallows, plenty of corn. Finish: neutral, sweet, no burn. Very approachable for a beginner. -
Balcones Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed February 7, 2015 (edited July 14, 2017)Sophisticated flavor. Underrated here. Drops of Water open up a smoky nose, converting into Creamy vanilla, orange peel, coffee (or is it tobacco?). A very pleasant un-peated smokiness at the finish. Little bit of pepper on the end also. Unique& highly recommended if you can find a bottle. -
High West A Midwinter Night's Dram
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed January 6, 2015 (edited October 23, 2015)Splendid. Briny on the nose, gets luscious and creamy - almost like a good malted whisky - on the palate. Shifts drier on the finish. The spice is balanced throughout. Very easy drinking. Highly-recommended. -
Packs a wallop, but not as devastating neat as Bookers. Nose has holiday baking spices, albeit a little chemical-esque. Palate picks up orange peel, and perhaps a little leather. Finish fades into smoky cinnamon. Classic bourbon profile; slightly overpriced. PS- honest to goodness: I didn't read Morton's note before posting this.

Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 23, 2014 (edited December 23, 2014)Changing my opinion: pretty creamy. Palate gets interesting with near-spice domination. fading into the finish, picks up tobacco, caramel and sweet corn. Afertaste likewise is unremarkable. Had a variety of experiences. This rye seems quite susceptible to the effects of time and adding water. Not relegated to cocktail bar--this is growing on me! -
Balvenie DoubleWood 17 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 4, 2014 (edited November 4, 2015)Like a slightly smoother Macallan 12. Nose sniffs of citrus, caramel, and a hint of maltiness that blends into the pallate. From there, dried fruit and a substantial sherried taste emerge. Finish is pleasant, though subdued. Settles in nicely with a couple drops of water. First couple sips neat seem like just a Mac 12. As you continue to explore the glass, it is something clearly better.
