Mayor Pingree 7 year cask strength
Bourbon — ?, USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 6, 2024)Aroma - nutty, dry cocoa powder, dark fruits, slight hint of honey Taste - Aroma transferring over to the palate here. Lot of nutty flavors with dark fruits and caramel. Really nice balance. Getting some baking spices on the finish bring a bit more complexity. Overall - Solid but nothing to get all worked up about -
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 6, 2024)Aroma- rye forward, dark fruits, slight hint of herbal tea and I’m also getting a floral note. Cinnamon and oak comes forward as it opens up. Taste - Rye is big and bold on that first sip. Proceeding sips…barnyard hay, light citrus note like an orange peel, faint hint of baking spices. Very smooth, even lightly creamy on the finish. Again, I’m picking up a floral note mid to back of the palate. -
Found North Cask Strength Whisky ( Batch 6)
Rye — Canada
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 15, 2024)Aroma - blueberry maple pancakes and vanilla frosting donuts. It literally smells like you are walking into a bakery in the morning. Getting a lot of antique store like notes as it opens (old, musty, oaky tones). Taste - Everything transferring from the nose to the palate. A shit ton of maple, vanilla frosting here. Old dusty oak lingers in the background holding it together like a backbone. Rye component starts to make its presence known right before the finish in the form of a massive burst of bubblegum. The finish ebbs and flows with darker tones of berries and even a slight rich chocolate fudge is picked up in the finish. Every once in a while that bubblegum rye note creeps into the finish which is a delight in my opinion. Overall - this is an absolute flavor bomb that drinks well below its proof. Very decadent, dessert like whiskey. Only knock on this is its viscosity at its proof. I’m being extremely nit-picky here, but the combination of heavy maple presence and high proof wants my brain to think that this should be more “sticky” and viscous on the palate. The finish is extremely long too which further makes me want to have this have more “body” to it. Worth the Price of Admission???? - fuck yea it is. The value you are getting in this around $150 is amazing. -
Wild Turkey 101 12 Year Distiller's Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 6, 2024)Aroma - musty oak mixed with sweet vanilla, dark fruit and toffee. Taste - following the nose. Very long oaky finish though which is really awesome. Overall - complexity lacks, but the balance of flavors and the finish are really remarkable. -
Dry Hills Montana Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Montana , USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 6, 2024)Aroma - smells young but I’m getting lots of corn and wheat here. Rye is non existent. Marshmallow, lots of pear notes here mixed with apples and honey. Graham crackers coming through as it opens up. No alcohol presence. Taste - Getting more apples than pears here along with that honey graham cracker note. There is light bursts of orange creamsicle towards the back of the palate and continues a little bit through the finish that I enjoy. Alcohol makes itself known on the finish and it’s a nice touch. Overall - yeah this is good… but the price point isnt justified…. That orange creamsicle note is what drives up the experience for me. Very easy drinking but again… there are soma monster bourbons at this price range that are simply better -
Stagg Barrel Proof Bourbon 22A
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 8, 2024)Aroma - honey, alcohol soaked dark fruits, caramel dominate the nose. I keep picking up a big rye note as well that elevate the complexity. Vanilla, aak. burnt marshmallow and hint of black licorice really help develop complexity. This is candle-worthy IMO Taste - Blast of vanilla, caramel and citrus.. (some vibes of orange creamsicle mixed with a shit ton of caramel). Some oak notes For the proof it is quite decadent and is well hidden. Overall - Wow. This batch is incredible. I’m not a huge BT fan as all of them are overpriced at most stores but this one is really damn good. The finish is long and full of heat, caramel, and burnt marshmallow .... every few sips I get a wave of orange creamsicle that ebbs and flows on the finish as well which is awesomel -
Angel's Envy Private Selection Single Barrel Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 6, 2024)105.8 proof 52.9% ABV Aroma - massive brown sugar, burnt caramel, cherries and raisins. Slight hint of lumber… Really nice balance of port here. Taste- follows the nose with brown sugar. Nice balance of the port barrel. Slightly drying on the palate. Overall - I’m not usually big on port finishes, but this pretty nice -
Penelope Architect 6 Year Celebreation
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed February 5, 2024 (edited February 6, 2024)Aroma- berries and oak jump out of the glass. Love it. Awesome vanilla profile as well. As it opens, caramel really pushes forward. Very sweet all the way around. There is no alcohol presence whatsoever. No rye presence either so not sure what the mashbill is and Im too lazy to look it up (vial provided by a close friend) Taste - A sweet caramel and oak bomb. This is all oak at all levels of the palate (from start, mid-palate and finish). The oak really becomes slightly drying on the finish though. There is a presence of the typical vanilla note but its more at the front of the palate Overall - the French oak dominates the palate. The viscosity is tremendous though. Really coats the entire palate. -
Aroma-caramel and old wet oak are really bold here up front. Getting quite a bit of lemon cake with vanilla frosting… and some leather presence as well coming through. As it opens up I’m getting some red apple notes and even a slight touch of cracked black pepper. I must say. For a <$40 bottle, the nose is quite nice and complex. The oak presence is very nice and reminds me a much older aged bourbon. Really hope the palate follows the nose on this. Taste - light fruit and caramel.. touch of vanilla. Still getting a light hint of that sweet cake and frosting. The finish is very short and has a slightly drying aspect on the back end. This is coming in quite hot too. Little rough around the edges to be honest. Overall - the nose is far superior than the palate. The nose comes off complex and much older.. the palate is youthful, flat and the finish is quite drying. It drinks a hotter than its proof too. For under $40 price, it’s average. Decent bottle to leave out for parties (I ended up putting this into a decanter). Probably something I will end up making an old fashion with. Doubt I grab another bottle.
