On the bottle, it says a "hint" of chocolate, but it's more than a hint on the nose. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful scent, but it's prominent. But on the other hand, it doesn't cover other standard rum smells, there's some nice funk there. On the palate, this is smooth, with a bit of wood spice at the end. It's sweet for sure, but not overly so. Any concerns that this is a bottom shelf sugar bomb dissipate immediately, this is balanced and can be sipped neat. The chocolate flavor is deep, and lingers. You have to like chocolate to like this rum, but if you don't like chocolate then I guess you have other issues. Props to Bruno Mars and his team. 12/31/17

Willett Family Estate Bottled 6 Year Straight Rye
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Kentucky), USA
Reviewed December 23, 2017 (edited September 6, 2020)Barrel no 145, 58.6%. Fantastic nose. Rich taste, spicy, slightly floral, deep. There's a slight paper note that's hard to place. But otherwise this is a fine whiskey. Well balanced. Unmistakably a rye. Very drinkable. 12/22/17 6 year rye, barrel 6066, 128 proof. Smells like grass clippings. And rye sweetness. Can't mistake this for anything other than a rye. Floral. Some sweetness. 9/6/20 -
Deep nose, a hint of bread and butter pickles. Strong alcohol notes, the proof is evident. Complex on the tongue. Floats a bit, like it never fully releases all its flavor. Don't get me wrong, this is delicious. 12/22/17 Sweet pickles on the nose andpalate, mixed with sweet fruit. Spicy. Pecan shells at the end. Rich and deep, and waaaaaaarm. 7/7/18

Lot No. 40 12 Year Cask Strength
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed December 22, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Not the strongest nose, but full. Smells like rye bread. Some sweetness, and herbal notes. It definitely kicks you in the face, way more than you would expect for a 110 proofer. Lots going on here. Lingering spice. Floral and herbal with a pleasant sweetness. Flavor bomb but not harsh. Definitely need to come back to this. 12/22/17 Same bottle, almost 7 months later. Unmistakably a rye on the nose. Rye bread and brown sugar, a slight floral note. On the palate, sweet flowers. Flavorful but light. Not as complex as I remember. I must not be a huge rye fan, this is a bit hyped. 7/7/18 Different bottle. A musty note on the nose that I don't think I've noticed before. Still stings. Sweet bread, cola. Nice nose. On the palate, a strong industrial note. Sweetness and a hint of tea. I can see why some would like this, but still not a huge fan. 11/29/2021 -

Taste is interesting - an odd wood note. Mild sweetness. A strong but pleasant spiciness. This one seems like it'll develop. 12/22/17 108.2 proof. This is like a rye plus... something. It's very flavorful. 1/18/18 -
Lock Stock & Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey 18 Year
Rye — Canada
Reviewed December 22, 2017 (edited May 30, 2021)Good nose. Gingerbread. Butter. Brown sugar. Velvety on the tongue. Super smooth, it does not drink like a 109 proofer. Nose translates to the tongue. Super long finish. Good stuff. 12/22/17 Over two years later and... still great. What a nose, with cacao nibs, fruit, salted butter, lambic, burnt sugar, and perfume. On the tongue, spicer than I remember it, but still elegant. Some dark cacao, slightly sour fruit, nice warmth. 4/8/2020 -
Cherry, banana, and oak on the nose. Interestingly, a bit of truffles as well, an earthy note I'm not used to with Beam. On the palate, the nose transfers directly. A woody, mushroomy, fruity mix. Char as well. Spice and heat requisite with the proof. Tastes a bit young. Initially, this seems like a departure from the normal Beam profile (although the cherry note is familiar), it seems different from Jim Beam Bonded. Sweeter. With more sips this ventures back to Beam territory. The vanilla builds. I may need to let this open up and try it again. 12/14/17
