Octomore Masterclass 08.1/167
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed November 1, 2019 (edited August 1, 2020)OCTOMORE MASTERCLASS 8.1 8YO 59.3% - THREE MONTHS SITTING SAMPLE BOTTLES - rOASTED BBQ MEAT, peppery, sweet woodchips, apple woodchips 3.25 - oaky, apple, malty, and dense creamy and dark choco, fire hot pepper given the high ABV, 3 - sustained light to mid smoke, oaky 3 3.25 Nosing. Very sweet aroma, honey and oats, and oak in the first whiff. For the second whiff, you get hit more with a very slight burn from the intensity of high alcohol and burnt rubber tires. Flavour. High ABV but it doesn’t have the peppery burn that you get like from all other relatively young whisky. What you find is a soothing warmness that spreads across your mouth - a sensation I’ve not felt with other whisky before. Once the first wave of warmness boils over, you get strong Saltiness, briny and iodine, and a smooth creamy texture Finish - Smokey, definitely but calling this peatiness will not do this justice. Give it 10 seconds and you are licking the bottom of a bbq beef shank cauldron. Don’t feel so? Force a belch - and you will be surprise at the aroma that erupts from within you. Weird - but true -
Nosing - iodine, medicinal - give it awhile and you smell heavy oaks, light vanilla Flavour - very smooth. But iodine hit is not to my liking. A burst of floral follows, a little eucalyptus, citrus zest, and a tease of creme brûlée as you creep towards the back Finish - no smoke at all, but sustain led fruitiness takes you all the way

ardbeg 10yo the ultimate Doing this alongside with Corryve & An OA Of the three, this is the lightest in color Beautiful caramel smokiness, little pepper to none, roasted bbq meat, roasted nuts, dryness 3 Bitterness, smokey incense, nutty, creamy, malty 2.75 Long sustain smoke 2.75 2.75 Undil Nosing: incendiary burn, proceed with caution. In the second whiff you find strong vanilla, campfire, sweet toffee playfulness Flavour: immediate burning on the tongue and Lingering through, oiliness and sharp kick on the front and back palate. Oiliness is distinct and the peppery chilli flakes remains for a while. It’s a straightforward whisky, contrary to the nosing, there was no sweetness - what you get is brute manly wood, heat, charcoal, fire. Finish: a smoothing campfire smokiness that lingers for a while. The oiliness of the whisky ensures a sustained gentle smokiness. Half a dram/4drops dil Nosing: fiery burn doesn’t taper away, sweetness of toffee candies flavour remains Flavour: drastic change in profile, you will find less burn on the tip of your tongue but the rest of your mouth remains ignited. You begin to taste a creamy marshmallow baked in campfire. Finish: no change

Compared with 2020 limited release and 2016 200th 8YO. THe nosing is very mild in comparison, which is surprising cause I recalled it having very distinct earth notes. More mineral, cherry dark fruits, mid pep, smooth camp fire, 2.5 Compared to 8YO this has a lot more depth and complexity, one-sided dimension though towards smoke, gentle drink with a nice meaty apple smoke and peat that is not overwhelming, sweetness, oaky 2.75 Oaky and woody, smooth light campfire Low to mid sustain 2.5 Undil Nose - fierce burn Flavour - tinge of heat on the front, light oil and saltiness, thick and rich - easy to drink Finish - peatiness is smooth and balance, not overly powerful but sufficiently present for all Smokey lovers.

LAPHROAIG Quarter Cask 48% JUL 2020 CAVEAT THAT THESE ARE OLD OPENED SAMPLE BOTTLES, SITTING AROUND FOR APPROX 3 MONTHS HOT PEPPER, raisin, creaminess, malty 2 Peppery, bitterness, malty, oaky, raisins is strong 2.25 slightly peaty, nice long smooth fire 2.75 2.25 -- Undil Nose. Incredible vanilla and berries flavour hits you immediately. Strongly influenced by the smaller barrel used to making this. Obviously a huge plus imparting strong, lasting impression. Moderately mild fieriness. Flavour. Flavourful, saltiness and oiliness, with a hit to the back of the throat. The saltiness is a bit too much. Gets a little use to it and it’s better After taste - mostly a mild peatiness

Very Fiery peppery hits you hard. Saltiness. Peatiness. Vanilla and caramel comes in after the first four whiffs. Palate. Very light on the palate, which is a pleasant surprise. Surprisingly since the nosing was intense. Almost feels like it’s been in the cask for a while. Feels the burn on the back of the throat. The flavour is light Finish. Nice mashmellow peatiness that lingers for a long finish. Caramel taste at the end. Personally, go for the finish because it makes it all worthwhile. 4
