Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2020 (edited January 26, 2021)This is a strong Scotch. The nose pulls me in with dark raisin, burned butter, coffee or chocolate and spice. The palate is hot and sweet. More pepper, oak, a bit of toffee, nutmeg, maybe dark cherry. The finish is long, almost smoky. There is no denying this is a beast. However, I enjoy it. A lot. I will have this on the shelf whenever I can. -
Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch No. 006
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2020 (edited April 7, 2022)Nose erupts with chocolate, ripe banana, grilled strawberries and spice. The palate is hot, which can be taken for pepper and more spice, or just burn and heat. Water settles this down a bit, brings out some light oak, malt and a mix of red fruits. The finish is long and drying. This is a sweet dram with a beautiful nose, but the palate is rough. I enjoy it, but others may find it just too young and abrasive. -
Glen Moray Elgin Classic Sherry Cask Finish
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 23, 2020 (edited July 9, 2024)The nose is very approachable. Fruity, a little spice and oak, and some honey. The palate is also relaxed. Apricot or pear with some cereal sweetness. A hint of chocolate can be found and some baking spices or light cinnamon. The finish goes away fairly quickly, but it is easy and does not leave with any bitter notes. A great value dram and one that can be easily enjoyed with friends. -
Old Forester Classic 86 Proof
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 21, 2020 (edited April 10, 2020)The palate is gentle for bourbon. More vanilla, a little caramel, cinnamon, and oak. Young. I find some alcohol notes on the nose and a bit of bitterness on the finish. With time, I think this is an excellent mash bill. In this bottle? It's average. Not bad, but not great. -
Cragganmore Distillers Edition
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 1, 2020 (edited April 27, 2021)Expressive and fruity nose followed by a gentle malt with hints of deep baking spices. I enjoy this expression (CggD-6570) a little overpriced, but a quality dram worth sipping slowly to discover the layers of flavour. -
Pike Creek 21 Year Finished in Speyside Single Malt Casks
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed February 7, 2020This is an excellent Canadian whisky. Lots of toffee, butter, and a bit of oak and fruit on the nose. The palate is full of baking spices, a little pepper, and lots of cooked brown sugar. It is very coating and really reminds me of buttered baking. The finish is only medium but allows more of the oak to come through. Overall it is too sweet for me but easy to sip and certainly a complex dram to spend an evening with. -
Deanston 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 25, 2020 (edited March 24, 2020)How is this so low? I need to get deeper into the bottle, but there are lots of great flavours to pick out here. Light on the nose, maybe lemon, pear? Then on the palate is coasts so well, brings out toffee, vanilla, and yellow fruits. The oak and char finish is fantastic. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I think this is a "classic" Scotch with some extra kick. Cheers! -
J.P. Wiser's Alumni Whisky Series Larry Robinson
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed January 19, 2020 (edited January 20, 2020)I am very surprised at how much I am enjoying this. Lots of plum, or date or dark fruit. Wrap that up in caramel and corn sweetness. This is truly unique and work trying. An exceptional Canadian dram. -
This is not sipping whisky. But then, it's not supposed to be. It is all lemon, grapefruit, maybe a little pepper in the mouth and some herbs. If you sip this, you will be disappointed. However, if you are looking for those flavour notes in a cocktail, it will do very well. (Sipping 2 stars, Cocktail 4 stars)
