Dewar's 12 Year The Ancestor (Discontinued)
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed May 23, 2020 (edited December 5, 2020)Gentle lemon, honey, cinnamon, and a bit of apple on the nose. The palate is smooth, adds more cereal notes, vanilla and finishes quickly with a bit of oak and maybe a bit more spice. This is one of the easiest drinking Scotches I have come across. It will not change anyone's mind about Scotch, or ignite a passion to pursue Scotch, but it is also well balanced and crazy affordable. I am sure I'll buy another bottle one day. -
Glen Garioch 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 10, 2020 (edited April 27, 2022)Deeper spices, older wood, a bit of tea, some dried fruit, clove and orange on the nose. The palate brings a delightful coating nature, some heat, malt, a bit of cinnamon or spice, oak, and vanilla. Perhaps a bit of smoke? The finish is drying, sweet, and asked for another sip. I have had this bottle before, but this time around, I am really enjoying it. A fantastic deal in Canada. If you see this on the shelf, I would do yourself a favour and pick it up. -
So coming back to this I continue to enjoy the bottle. Please re-review. I get lemon, graham cracker, a bit of spice and even oak on the nose. The palate is complex. It has some orchard fruits, cooked spices, cinnamon, vanilla and a bit of honey or caramel too. The mouthfeel is fantastic; coating and mouth-watering. The finish brings out more oak, a hint of char, and fades to ginger with light fruit. Overall, this is a great scotch and has more going on then many 12-year-olds in the same category. I would pick this up if you can.

Westland American Oak American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Washington , USA
Reviewed May 9, 2020 (edited May 17, 2020)Sweet, roasted malt. Coffee or dark chocolate mixed with dried or leather fruits. Some dark citrus too. Flavour is complex. More brown sugar, caramel, vanilla. Coffee or roasted grains builds. It is peppery from youth in the palate. The fruit fades and grain, roast notes take over. The finish is drying, grassy, and lingering. After a time I'm left with espresso notes and a pleasant bitter notes on the edges of my mouth. This is good -
Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey (Discontinued)
American Single Malt — Colorado, USA
Reviewed May 6, 2020 (edited July 2, 2020)The nose greets me with lots of caramel and vanilla. A little bit of fruit and spice. The palate opened up with darker spice like clove, more malt sugars or oat nature with a fair amount of oak or young wood. The finish is hot but then settles into a nice char and sweetness. At times I have really enjoyed this bottle, while other times it tastes young and hot. Overall, I like this and will certainly buy it again. -
Signal Hill Canadian Whisky
Canadian — Newfoundland, Canada
Reviewed May 4, 2020 (edited November 3, 2021)This is a typical Canadian whisky profile but done well. The nose is brown sugar, maple syrup and a bit of oak or light spice. Maybe a little bit of orange zest, but just faint. The palate is very sweet. Sugar sweetness. This reminds me of Pike Creek a lot which is rum finished. It does have some nice coating notes, which can come across like butter or cooking oil. A bit of pepper or spice comes through on the palate and early finish. The finish is more sugar sweetness and a bit of bitter oak. I think this would satisfy many Canadian whisky drinkers, but for me, it's just too sweet. -
J.P. Wiser's Alumni Whisky Series Dave Keon
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed April 30, 2020 (edited November 14, 2020)The nose is a great balance between sweet fruit and a bit of spice. The palate brings on some caramel, oak, a bit more spice all held together with an excellent coating nature. The finish is nicely drying with more good wood. This is likely my favourite of the NHL series. -
I had big hopes for this bottle. Perhaps I built it up too much. The nose has sweet floral vanilla, cinnamon heart candy, brown sugar, deep baking spices and something vegetable or grassy. The palate has something a little sour or tannic, then some spice, pepper and relaxes into a bit of caramel and citrus. The finish for me is nicely drying and fairly sweet. A slight bitterness hangs around too. In the end, I think I prefer their regular expression. Nowhere near as complex but $17 instead of $85!

Lohin McKinnon Single Malt
Canadian — British Columbia, Canada
Reviewed April 29, 2020 (edited June 8, 2020)Fresh, youthful but rich dram. The nose is crisp fruit, lemon and cooked butter. The palate coats nicely, but is sharp and has a fair amount of ethanol. Still, it has some spice, honeyed lemon, graham cracker and more fried butter. The finish is short, drying with a bit of oak. I find it hard to rate this. The flavours are excellent, but it is hampered by its youth. -
Glendronach 2003 11 Year Single Cask Pedro Ximenez
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2020 (edited July 13, 2020)Rich, deep fruits, cooked with Christmas spices. There are coffee and chocolate notes too, with a slight hint of citrus. With time, the nose even gives tropical fruit. The palate is sweet, dark raisin, coating, and some darker spice. The finish is long, oaky, and drying. Every sip asks for another. I bought this when I didn't know enough about Scotch. It remains one of my greatest errors in whisky that I did not buy the shelf.
