Compass Box The Story of the Spaniard
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed October 24, 2018 (edited March 2, 2019)Bought a bottle yesterday and was excited because I love Spice Tree, Oak Cross and last years’ extravaganza. Upon opening it, you definitely can smell the peanut skins and caramel. When tasting it though it had a characteristic I couldn’t quite pinpoint - almost saw dusty. I wasn’t sure if I liked it and kept sipping to distinguish the flavor. I passed it to my wife to see if she could figure it out and she said confidently that it tasted like “vomit!” I laughed and took it back and wish I could say she was wrong! It smelled and tasted like the vomit in the hallway of your middle school that the custodian poured sawdust on to clean up. I did finish it but had to chase it with EH Taylor’s delicious single barrel to cleanse the pallet! It may have just been the power of suggestion but curious if anyone else agrees! I’ll try it again (maybe a smaller pour) and see if it changed now that it’s open.... -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Straight Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 18, 2018 (edited December 14, 2018)I like rye and have had nothing yet as delicious as the willet rye. This was highly recommended to me and good but not nearly as flavorful but still delicious. Smells like minty pumpernickel bread. The flavor continues with mint and pepper but very little sweetness if any at all. Definitely some bite and heat. A slow sipper probably perfect on a cold night. -
Aberlour A'bunadh
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 27, 2018 (edited December 14, 2018)Smells like banana foster.... had with an ice cube and the 1st sip was delicious but made me sweat a little! Lots of heat and burn. But as the ice melts, it opens up so much and has so tremendous flavor: figs, banana, raisin and wood. And it gets you buzzed.... a win-win! -
