Filliers 5 Year Oude Graanjenever
Distiller Score 89
The nose is young and malty, with fresh notes of juniper, as well as nutmeg and orange. The palate displays a lovely fruitiness (think red apple), followed by cinnamon and cardamom, before ending on grassy notes. The balance of this drink is impressive, especially at this age.

This jenever is quite aromatic. Sweet and savory botanicals are in use here and what comes to mind is that it is balanced. Holiday cookies also come to mind as there's a sweet pastry quality. But don't misunderstand. This isn't overly sweet, but it is very enticing. What really sets this jenever apart is that often times when tasting jenever the neutral grain component and the malt wine component can be tasted separately from each other in the final result. Not here. This is just stunning. Serve lightly chilled and neat.

The rye influence is very clear. Notes of menthol, rye bread and oranges. Quite sweet as well, with marshmallow at the forefront. The palate has a lovely spiciness to it, but also some great sweet and sour interplay. Plenty of toffee too. If you love rye whiskey, this is certainly worth looking out for.

Just like it should be, this has a grainy foundation with light juniper notes, but also some basil, subtle spices and floral touches. The palate shows a sweeter, maltier side, as well as coriander and a pinch of pepper. A well balanced, inviting Oude Genever.

Distiller Score 92
A savory warm breakfast cereal aroma (think Malt-O-Meal). The feeling in your mouth is full and soft with a moderate amount of oil. Slightly sweet, but it is not an obvious sweetness. Again, think breakfast cereal sweet. Juniper is faint. Slight sharpness in the middle there; just the alcohol telling you it's there. Pretty easy to drink. Maybe too easy? Not a bad thing, in our estimation.

A fresh jonge jenever, with very light notes of juniper, coriander, and pine needles. There's a touch of rye bread and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is oily, with darker spices, such as cloves and nutmeg, and just a hint of juniper. A touch of aniseed too. Balanced and fairly complex.

Distiller Score 87
The aroma of this jenever is pretty faint with cereal. As you taste, it is slightly sweet on entry with the malty flavor not coming through until the finish. That taste is slight as well. Bitter juniper flavor shows up at the end which despite the roundness of the jenever finishes clean and dry. Serve chilled, neat or even try in a very dry Martini. Vodka drinkers, this could be the bridge to take you to gin town.

Inviting and warm with lots of little subtleties such as cinnamon and cardamom along with light touches of aniseed and vanilla. The palate gives us warm baking spices, particularly cinnamon. Fairly sweet also, but with a subtle peppery edge. This is good stuff, and would be interesting side step for a whiskey enthusiast. Supremely balanced.

Bols Zeer Oude Genever
Distiller Score 87
Displaying a nice maltiness, accompanied by resin, pine sap and a distinct juniper aroma. Finally there's some cumin. The palate is fresh and subtle. The grain isn't in the lead, but it's always there as a base for the botanicals to shine on, such as aniseed and licorice. The juniper notes linger. An oude genever that delivers exactly what you'd want it to.

Distiller Score 73
A very green and vegetal Oude Genever, with some room still for subtle juniper notes and aniseed. Not much malt, but some mild spices. The palate shows soft grains and cloves, with a hint of cinnamon. The juniper makes an encore here. Overall an okay example of the category, but the aroma of wet towel is less than inviting.

The wood aging comes through on the nose with raw wood and wood spices. The malt wine comes next with juniper and other botanicals coming through eventually. Further inhalations reveal a fruity profile like an apple eau-de-vie. The taste is bittersweet and has more of the raw wood that you found on the nose. Warm spices come through such as cinnamon. Overall the jenever entices you to take more sips with its bittersweet profile and could be used in place of whiskey in an Old Fashioned cocktail.

Whiskey drinkers who've had unaged or new make whiskey will be familiar with the aroma here. A beer-y aroma with just a little juniper on the nose. Taste-wise, the malt wine comes through a bit with the finish showing the peppercorns. Overall, the jenever is a bit confused. Not really suitable for sipping neat, you could try to mix it like you would a dry gin just cut back on any sugar you'd ordinarily add.
