Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition Style Rye

Strawberries and cereal on the nose, with spice behind, but very light and dry. Big roundhouse punch of grassy spicy rye and vanilla oak, then sweet cereal, fruit, and a little damp char smoke in the mouth. Oily coating mouthfeel and good ethanol burst for a 45 abv (yes, my bottle says 90 proof). Grassy and floral finish lingers, but dry, not sweet. This whiskey softens and rounds with an ice cube. Nice rich auburn color. At this price point a great mixing rye (think a Manhattan), but it's also worth drinking with a little ice.

Nose: Simple spice, heavy on the pepper Pallet: Rye spice on the front which is nice but ends in peppery. If that was mellowed out this pour would rate higher. Finish: Sour with some heat Just one dimensional. Working on finishing off the bottle, it’s okay, not worth the 90pts that distiller gave it. If you’re a JIm Beam fan you should have this on our bar. I’ll likely have one just in case someone is a fan and for $23 it’s easy to keep around...

Not really a great rye and not really a great Jim Beam, this was not what I was expecting, but in its own right it is a decent whisky. Cinnamon spice and oak are very dominant. I like to let this one breathe. This Prohibition style rye is not like anything I’ve tasted before, it is sweet and smooth but at the same time there is depth and potency. I might buy again but not as a rye substitute, because the limited amount of actual rye in this is very noticeable when comparing to an actual Canadian rye whisky

At first I need to correct yet another error in Distiller. Description says 45%, but it's 40 %. Even this picture says so. Back to the drink: I love that fruity smell. Apple, pear and hint of cinnamon. Sweet, sweet baking. The taste is also nice, but little bit watery on the front. The undiluted product must be nice. But this is very gentle sipper. Sweet, fruity. And not really suitable for drinks and cocktails - it lacks the punch, the acidity and it just dissappear in any cocktail. It says "pre-prohibition" style, but it feels more "prohibition style" - take some nice whisky and water it down to make volume. That's sad, especially if the lingering taste profile is so nice. But try to guess it's rye in blind test, I dare you.

Mild, but got better towards bottom of the bottle. Good introduction to rye.
