Dettling Small Batch Straight Alabama Bourbon
Bourbon — Alabama, USA
Reviewed November 26, 2020 (edited January 31, 2024)I appreciate a bourbon that lays off the corn. This one does that and has an interesting cedar funk to it. Rock on and God Bless Dixie (Modern not past)! -
Ferrand 10 Générations Cognac
Cognac — Grande Champagne, France
Reviewed July 3, 2020 (edited February 22, 2022)Like a seductive noblewoman having a tryst with a commoner, the appeal lies not only in what is revealed but also in what is concealed. That lingering mystery that leaves you wanting more. -
I had to see what all the fuss was about when I saw this at a great price. Turns out it’s sweet corn, buttered like mom makes, and not much else. Compared to Jack and Jim, it’s sweeter with much less bite. As a Burbon par excellence, it shines. I would type this as the Burbon Typicale, and award it the height of American whiskey excellence, but it betrays the weaknesses of Bourbon outright (too strong, too obvious, too simple). You’ve won the game with this one, but it was a simple, regional (not global) game. Congratulations? Still, being the top of a class should outrank a lower status in a more prestigious line.

Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon

Reviewed April 18, 2020 (edited April 19, 2020)A good standard bourbon. All the hallmarks: vanilla, corn, and caramel. Middle of the road but good for the price. -
Springbank 12 Year Cask Strength (Batch 17)
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed March 29, 2020 (edited May 9, 2021)Damn. Worth the hype. Damn all the accusations of fan bait, this dram delivers peat and sherry in a strong balance that donwplays neither. Truly excellent.
