Privateer True American Amber Rum
Gold Rum — Massachusettes, USA
Reviewed November 30, 2020 (edited May 8, 2021)Subtle coconut and sugar Nose after resting for 10 min. Subdued nose with first notes of coconut and vanilla. Some brown sugar and cane with a very slight caramel and a whiff of cinnamon, baking spices, and pineapple At tasting- the flavor definitely is more pronounced than the nose. Flavor begins with the caramel, some saltiness, and coconut and some ethanol heat but with a notable absence of young hot alcohol across the taste, just a clean burn here. The taste continues with flavors of brown sugar and molasses before landing of a moderately short finish of spice and sugar. -
Pungent charcoal and oak wood smoke mixed with fruity caramel, pepper, and butterscotch notes. Some vanilla appears as it opens up in the glass along with cinnamon and some mintyness. On the taste, some charcoal bitterness tempers the tongue as the full flavor emerges. Smoke then caramel, black pepper, baking spices, vanilla, salt, butterscotch, finishing up with toasted marshmallow and butterscotch. A great budget sipper and character for mixer.

Hirsch The Horizon Straight Bourbon (Batch AAH0320)
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed November 29, 2020 (edited March 29, 2021)First pour from bottle. Immediate buttery sweet corn, vanilla, and some fruitiness. Nose opens up to darker caramel and more vanilla, orange, and baking spice. Late there is a touch of a milk cocoa note. Taste- Begins with a buttery, corn, morphing into some alcohol heat, vanilla to butter caramel, ending on sweet corn and chocolate notes and a moderate finish. Later tastes on this bottle which was a new open have been better with more opening up of the cocoa notes and more sweetness. There is a bit of nuance on this dram, although I would prefer some more punch behind the whiskey. Let this one breathe to have a unique chocolate whiskey experience. -
A rather subdued nose that elicits aromas of banana, pineapple, buttery oak, and brown sugar. Upon tasting, there is some mild sweetness on the palate that reveals tastes of brown sugar and banana before the alcohol burn cuts in, fades into a sugar cane and very slight buttery residual. Finish is short and clean. Goes down very easily and does not demand attention.

The nose is incredible for a budget option here. On the nose you will find a seductive and tantalizing array of notes from butterscotch, medium caramel, raisin, and apple. Very easy to find a caramel apple in the nose. A touch of banana and vanilla round out the experience. On the taste a sweet, but not cloying taste greets your palate with strong caramel apple, raisin and vanilla notes. There is a bit of youth characteristics present with a harsh alcohol note mid tongue but is forgivable with the moderately long finish ending on Carmel covered raisins.
