Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 20, 2019 (edited October 21, 2019)Spice forward and punchy. If I didn't look this up, i never would have thought it was a wheater - I'd even call it rye forward. Otherwise, good enough with some bite and an afterthought of sweetness. A good sipper but better as something you're going to drink somewhat quickly - too bad it's expensive This is the kind of bourbon I want a shot of if I'm both feeling rowdy and wanting to spend money. For something out of Texas, that feels just right. -
Hochstadter's Vatted Straight Rye Whiskey
Rye — Multiple Countries
Reviewed August 7, 2019 (edited August 6, 2023)For something that is a hundred proof, it drinks much closer to 80 or 90 Proof. I'd go so far as to call it light and refreshing with almost no burn and a thinner body (but not in an off-putting way). Nose- caramel, fresh cut grass, green tea with brown sugar. Reminds me a bit of fake nature smell (like a scented spray), but I don't mind too much. Flavorwise- lower on the rye spice scale than some, but more than something like Old Overholt, for instance. Grassy, somewhat peppery, green and leafy. Tobacco and a touch of leather round out the medium finish. Overall- a pleasant enough sipper but lacking in depth, mouthfeel, and character. I could easily drink this when in conversation with friends or with dinner, but I'd want something more if I were giving it my undivided attention.32.0 USD per Bottle -
Jim Beam Signature Craft Brown Rice Bourbon 11 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 29, 2019 (edited June 27, 2021)I am really enjoying this, especially at $13 for a 375ml. Complex and subtle, with a softness that I suspect is due to the use of rice. Lots of southern sweet tea notes with hints of marshmallow, tannin, woodsy spice, and burnt orange peel. The nose is so unexpectedly soft, but the finish is medium-long and pleasant.26.0 USD per Bottle -
First time revisiting this in about a year since I really embarked on my Bourbon journey, and I find that there's actually more to appreciate here then when I first started. compared to many newer bourbons entering the scene, this at least tastes like it was distilled with tradition in mind. Many great flavor profiles one would expect here with nothing out of the ordinary- leaning more heavily on the spicy, herbal side of the spectrum. Brown sugar and cinnamon round this out. I wish the finish were longer and the flavors less subtle, but, for price and proof, no real complaints. It's probably on par with any of the other standard, lower-mid-shelf offerings like Jim Beam white label or Buffalo Trace

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch B518
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 23, 2019 (edited July 3, 2021)When I first tried this upon immediately opening the bottle, I didn't love it. Tonight's taste, after leaving the 2/3rds full bottle on the shelf for months, is pretty close to perfection. My first thought is cognac, with hints of chocolate, pancake syrup (not maple), and buttermilk pancakes. It makes me think of that old cereal, French Toast Crunch Great chewiness on this pour. Like halfway to syrup. I want to just pour this one on my breakfast! -
Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 20, 2019 (edited November 2, 2019)This is a superb drink, with one of the chewier, thicker mouthfeels I've been able to find. The initial burst is vanilla toffee or rich caramel. Oaky and lightly sweet underneath. There is a cinnabon (cinnamon roll/ bun) quality to this that really captures both the richness of cream cheese frosting and pastry all at once. UPON REVISITING I am revisiting this some weeks later, after the bottle has had a chance to open up some. My initial quality rating remains unchanged, but the flavor nuances are different. This is much softer and more mellow than I remember, still rich, with a soft cocoa with marshmallow foam quality to it.50.0 USD per Bottle -
To me, Eagle Rare is the definition of a good, casual bourbon. There’s enough there to be fun for someone who is just getting into bourbon, or for the seasoned drinker to sip and not think about. Personally, I find it better for drinking absent-mindedly amongst friends, but find it a bit boring if I'm drinking it as a contemplative night cap. Casual bourbon drinkers might end their bourbon journey here, but I prefer something with more depth and higher proof.30.0 USD per Bottle
