Bunnahabhain 12 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed September 4, 2020 (edited September 6, 2020)The nose can be described as a combination of leather mixed with over chlorinated pool water. The taste is briny, salty, with the lightest touch of smoke, kinda like the smoke form a campfire that's 5 miles away. The aftertaste is oily and stays with you for a while, then you get to taste a last bit of sweetness along with saltiness just as the flavor fades. Overall not a great bottle of Scotch, but not a bad bottle of Scotch either. If you're asking if this a good introduction to Islay Scotch? I'd say no. Point newbies towards Caol Ila 12 or Laphroaig 10 instead. -
Is this a rye? I swear it comes off tasting like a rye whiskey. The nose, the taste, if you like rye than you might like this one. The nose is very ethanol heavy along with a smell of decade old burnt taffy. The taste is very unusual as well, its like tasting a sugar saturated mint mouth wash, I'm serious that's what I'm getting. I placed a little water and the flavors come out better, you taste more of that woody note which I like. Still this one is a head scratcher for me, not likely repeating another bottle purchase. I only picked up this bottle on a recommendation from a fellow customer when I was at my local liquor store trying to find something new to taste. Lets just say, we don't have similar tastes in bourbon.

On the nose you get what I can describe as a dusty smelling dark chocolate. As you take your first taste, that dark chocolate taste continues but minus that bitterness that dark chocolate is known for, but instead you feel the warmth, and I do mean warmth of this bourbon all throughout, even upon aftertaste and minutes after that. This is at 60% alcohol, and you really get a sense of this bourbon's full potential, its rich, dark, woody, I really enjoyed this one, definitely worth another purchase.

This bourbon is just alright, alright, alright...ok, I got that out of the way. I didn't know this was A-list actor Matthew Mcconaughey's whiskey, all I knew was when I bought it, it was next to all the Wild Turkey bourbons and I'm a fan of Wild Turkey. Only when I got home and looked for info on it online did I discover it was a "celebrity" brand whiskey. Regardless of all that, I really like this bourbon. The nose was kinda plain, really nothing to say. The taste reminds me of butterscotch candy on the finish and a slight cherry flavor on the beginning. At 43% alcohol it's at a nice sweet spot that makes it interesting enough for a daily dram, I'm glad that they didn't go for a cash grab and settle for the minimum of 40%, seems to me that Matthew Mcconaughey is a real whiskey guy, who has good taste, cares about his name on this bottle and not just a celebrity pushing a product they don't know or have a clue about, kudos to him.

You like cherry flavor in your bourbon? This is the one you're looking for. A prominent cherry flavored bourbon, but it does it tastefully and not overly aggressive as some other whiskey companies seem to be doing. I'm more of a woody, oak, and vanilla guy when it comes to my bourbon, but this whiskey I can appreciate. I have to say this Makers Mark 46 bottle is one of the best looking whiskey bottles I've ever owned, with Hibiki Harmony being my favorite one. I'm really curios how this bourbon would hold up if it was one of the ingredients in making a Manhattan. Anyways I like it, don't love it, I wouldn't buy another bottle for myself, but I would buy it as a gift for someone who has never tried it and I know they like cherry flavored whiskeys.

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 11, 2020 (edited July 16, 2020)There's something off pudding with this one and I usually become acclimated with a whiskey after a couple of drams, however this one I just couldn't vibe with that overly bitter note that this whiskey seems to give off. I love Wild Turkey Rare Breed and was looking forward to this one, but I was very disappointed to say it's not even close to what my flavor profile is accustomed to. For $65, I can think of so many other whiskeys I could have bought instead of this one. -
Such a wonderful dram every time you pour. The nose is a open fire that feels like you're standing in front of, along with a muddy, wet grass, on the shores of a beach somewhere, so good. If you blind tasted this, and were asked what proof was it, you'd be surprised with finding it at 57.1% alcohol, it doesn't come off that strong. With a proof that high I usually take it with ice, but this was so interesting that I drank it without. There is so much flavor hitting you underneath that smoke, it's fun just trying to find out what you're tasting as it hits you. I get beacon, cherry, dark chocolate, and a nice alcohol burn, I know this is Scotch, but I'm getting "The Kentucky Hug" once I swallow. It's a pricey Scotch at $90, but I'm glad I bought it, I'd pick it up again and only share it with another whiskey lover. This is a whiskey lover's drink, they certainly can appreciate the impact of the pour.

Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 28, 2020 (edited September 10, 2020)The nose I'd like to describe it; imagine sticking your face in a newly constructed oak cabinet and one of the drawers is filled with tangerines. That's the nose you'll get with this one, very interesting. The taste has a bit of a bite to it, especially on the front of the tongue. You need to stick around with this one, first impressions on the taste are not kind, this bourbon doesn't want to be your friend necessarily. Once you acclimate to the burn the flavors open up, I get a dominant cinnamon on the swallow and that tangerine on the nose reintroduces itself on the finish. Would I purchase another bottle? No, but I don't regret purchasing this one either. -
You really need to take your time with this one. If you judge this whiskey on just a couple of tastings you're giving this whiskey the short shift. If you give this whiskey a chance it really comes through as a really great sipper. The nose on this one is great, something I personally wouldn't mind wearing as a fragrance. As you smell the rich cherry and wood you want to explore it deeper, but as you try and take a bigger whiff, your nose gets burnt as you're reminded of that high proof. As for the taste you're hit with a rich, complex mouth feel that leaves your mouth a sharp sweetness and a nice burn of alcohol that fades into a woody after taste. This one is in the $60 range out here in LA, its a little pricey but I'm not sorry I bought it. Its a nice one to have in your collection.

This bourbon needs more love. For the price of this bourbon it hits way above its price point. The nose is straight up peanut butter, to experience the nose itself is worth the purchase of this whiskey for sure. As you take a sip you get these flavors that hit you differently as you swallow, one second you're tasting caramel toffee, the next second your tasting sugared Wheaties, the next second you're tasting a hit of cherries, the next second you're tasting a bit of that wood. The aftertaste you get the slightest hit of the peanut butter and a nice alcohol burn. I definitely see myself buying another bottle of this!
