Royal Brackla 12 Year (Discontinued)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 25, 2017 (edited August 2, 2017)Nice honey and orchard fruit on the nose. The palate is a little more muted on the fruit, with mostly oak coming through. Relatively short woodsy finish. Not bad, but nothing special. -
High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed May 24, 2017 (edited November 23, 2017)Grassy with unwelcome surprise of dill on the nose, and splintering fresh oak spice on the palate. Driftwood finish. Unfortunately one of the worst whiskeys I have ever tasted. -
Glenmorangie Lasanta Sherry Cask Finish 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 24, 2017 (edited August 2, 2017)Dried fruit (figs, raisins) on the nose and palate, and pleasantly chewy mouthful from the PX finish. The sweetness and spice are balanced nonetheless, as gentle malt and light honey notes manage to find their place. Relatively short finish compared to other sherried whiskies I have tried, but overall complex in an non-overwhelming way. -
Wayne Gretzky No. 99 Red Cask Whisky
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed May 22, 2017 (edited June 16, 2017)Mostly oak on the nose, balanced sweet palate with brown sugar, vanilla and gentle spice on the tongue. Otherwise, the finish is very short. Worth trying, but not worth buying for me. -
Laphroaig 15 Year 200th Anniversary
Single Malt — Islay , Scotland
Reviewed May 18, 2017 (edited December 15, 2017)Mellow combination of sweet peat, olive brine, and pipe tobacco on the nose. Sweet taste of pears makes its way into the palate, only to be counterbalanced with campfire smoke and sea salt. The finish is smooth and gently spiced. Really hard to keep my hands off this stuff! -
Glenkinchie 12 Year
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 18, 2017 (edited October 21, 2017)Floral and herbaceous on the nose, with some cereal and oak spice on the palate. Otherwise a gentle spirit if it weren't for that nagging alcohol burn on the finish. -
Knappogue Castle 12 Year Bourbon Cask Matured
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed May 17, 2017 (edited May 5, 2019)Floral and honied nose, followed by a host of tropical fruit on the palate (guava, papaya and cantaloupe). A bright citrus taste is also there throughout the dram. While the finish is relatively short, it is nevertheless a really enjoyable dram and an absolute bargain ($55 CAD) -
Whistlepig 10 Year Small Batch Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed May 17, 2017 (edited June 16, 2017)Vanilla, charred oak and burnt orange peels on the nose. Syrupy mouthful, and taste that I can only describe as honey sweetened red tea (rooibos). Soft tannins, lightly spiced, but fairly long finish. Surprisingly smooth for a whiskey bottled at a whooping 50% ABV.
