Woody Creek Colorado Straight 100% Rye
Rye — Colorado, USA
Reviewed February 8, 2021 (edited January 13, 2024)Appearance: Light, like green tea. Pretty weak legs Nose: Sweet rye, a bit of oak, honey, green apple Palate: No surprises. Crisp and bright, with a great blend of sweet and spice. Syrupy and coats the mouth well Finish: This was a surprise. Long, lingering finish. The sweetness gives way to peppery rye spice and stick around for ages and would make you think its more than 90 proof. Delightful. Notes: This was a great surprise. I was suckered in by their new branding and commercials on Spotify. I admit it. But finding 100% Colorado sourced ingredients is not common in CO's craft distilling scene, so I figured why not? I'm still relatively new to ryes, but I will be buying this again. If I had one minor gripe, it's the screw top. It's heavy and well made, but I just think a cork would be nicer.45.0 USD per Bottle -
Heaven's Door Straight Tennessee Bourbon
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed January 30, 2021 (edited February 22, 2021)Appearance: copper in color, decent legs in the glass Nose:Toasted grains, caramel apple, cinnamon Palate: The mouth-feel is a little watery. Tons of oak, and a good bit of spice. Some of the sweetness of a wheater, but with accompanying spice. Finish: Medium finish with a little bit of heat. Not disappointing, but not exceptional. Thoughts: So just as a note I'm drinking the Straight Bourbon, which isn't listed on here. I got this bottle in my Flaviar selection. It's got a lot of the sweet spice of a Four Roses small batch, but none of the fruit notes. A little two dimensional. I try not to read tasting notes or mash bills when sampling, but after I checked and it's 30% rye/barley, so I feel good about my assessment. It's not bad, and I'm glad I tried it, but I won't get another bottle.48.0 USD per Bottle -
Appearance: light caramel color, decent legs for what I'd guess is a younger bourbon Nose: Sweets and grains up front, with some sweeter fruit notes, almost like fig newtons. Off to a good start Palate: Very sweet palate, not as oily as I'd guess based off the legs. Reminds me of a wheated bourbon, with a bit of sweet corn, not the usual bready wheat. This could be the millet? Finish: Pretty short and disappointing. A little tangy with a soft mouth feel, maybe a bit of port wine? Meh This was a cool drink, just off the inclusion of millet. It's certainly unique. I'm not a fan of overly sweet bourbons, but this is approachable for a beginner. The finish is where it loses me. Cool idea

Appearance: Light amber, weak legs that look watery Nose: Rye-forward, with some generic sweetness, and a tiny bit of smoke. I'm not great at this, but I can't get much fruit. It could be there, just subtle. Still a good nose Palate: Sweet and spicy right away, and the smoke from the nose comes in here as a bit of char mixed with pepper. Finish: Longer spicy finish that I would have guessed for a watery looking dram. It's one dimensional, but pleasantly surprising for what I expected. Overall it's pretty good. If you like high rye bourbons with a bit of sweetness, this is simple, approachable and inoffensive. I personally won't buy a bottle, but I'm glad I tried it

Decent legs, a little darker color than I was expecting from the description. Nose: Rye-forward, with some caramel and almost bread dough Palate: immediate rye spice and sweet, like a young high rye bourbon. a little oily, and no real fruit notes. I back up my 'young' description, as a drop of water doesn't open it up at all Finish: pretty short, spicy at first but gives way to the bready dough from the nose. almost like a coors banquet. disappointing It tastes like a high rye, young bourbon with a letdown on the finish. Fine for what it is, but I'm glad I got just 1 pour. Might be kind of neat to surprise non-bourbon drinking friends with a rye-forward craft bourbon. This is coming from a guy that likes high-rye bourbons. It's not bad, just not for me.

Redwood Empire Lost Monarch Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed January 15, 2021 (edited March 6, 2021)Picked this up because I like high rye bourbons, so this blend seemed like it would be up my alley. Definitely notice the rye on the nose, along with sweet fruit, almost melon, and light brown sugar. Rye-forward flavor, but mixed right in with the sweetness of a young bourbon. The finish is where this stands out. It’s a wild ride that bounces back and forth between what you’d expect from rye vs bourbon. It’s definitely a shorter finish but leaves a nice mild sweetness with no real burn. Very unique. I think if they put some more age on it or bottled it at a higher proof, it would be even better38.0 USD per Bottle -
Old Forester 1897 Bottled In Bond
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 15, 2020 (edited July 20, 2021)Very complex. A drop or two of water helps me unpack some of this. Plums, baking spice, butter and leather on the nose. Floral and almost zesty taste, with a long almost earthy finish. I’m not nuanced enough to fully appreciate this, but I love it50.0 USD per Bottle -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 15, 2020 (edited January 19, 2021)Wood and oranges on the nose, almost a hint of peat. Immediately sweet on the tongue, but not syrupy sweet. Oak notes during a medium finish. Lower rye bourbons aren’t my first choice, but this is complex and approachable enough37.0 USD per Bottle -
