  • Laphroaig Triple Wood

    Single Malt — Islay, Scotland

    Rich stewed fruit, sherry and honey sweetness enveloped by a subdued version of the 10 year's medicinal briny peat. At 48% it's got a bit of a bite to it and unfortunately, like the 10 year, it hits mid palate acidic and dry. The sweetness almost prevents this from lingering as it fades to a sweet campfire smoke finish. I appreciate the sherried finish but it feels like a bit of failed merger. Neither the sherry or the peat is distinct enough to overcome the acidity and ABV. Decent but not one I'd purchase again. $90 in Ontario.

    Sugary sweet with thin tropical fruit and molasses. Not bad flavour but light and over sweet. I’d take this over Captain Morgan Black Rum. $28 in Ontario.

    Rye sweetness and spice hidden behind deep dark corn and caramel. It tastes like a bourbon/rye mix. Good but not what I’m looking for in either one of those categories. $50 in Ontario.

    Light sweet vegetal agave. Very slightly dry, very slight heat. Considering it’s one of the cheapest I’d say it’s one of the better blancos I’ve had. Nothing outstanding but nothing I don’t like. $38 in Ontario.

    Light vanilla, brown sugar, caramel. Molasses and slight prune. Very gentle warmth following. A good dark rum but just a little thin and dry to be a sipper. $40 for a litre bottle in Ontario.

    Rich, smooth and spiced with caramel, vanilla, gingerbread, fruit cake, cinnamon and black licorice. A dessert all in it’s own. The only rum you can legally use for a Dark N Stormy. $29 in Ontario.

    Smooth and rich with sweet butterscotch, caramel and slight molasses. A good quality solid amber rum but nothing exciting. $45 in Ontario.

    Vanilla, oak, a hint of dark fruit sweetness and light tobacco smoke followed by significant floral spice. Good underlying flavour but unrefined. Not available in Ontario.

    Very light with buttered popcorn (good call Amanda), soft agave and caramel, very gentle pepper and the softest hint of smoke. Delicate but interesting. $66 in Ontario.

    Smooth with rich toasted agave, crisp apple, soft oak and maybe a suggestion of smoke. It’s much better than I though it would be, and a great deal at $38 in Ontario.
