Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2009
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 21, 2018 (edited February 12, 2019)So, I recently was astounded by the laddie. There was something just so clean, pure, balanced and delicious about it. This expression has notes of everything so great about the laddie. I’d say it is even more complex. Nose is a sour apple, wood and spice. Palate the hint of crisp laddie with deeper honey, pepper, a hint of orchard fruit in the background and wood spice. the finish is slightly bitter but not off putting. It’s really good, but I’ll be buying the laddie over it if available because there is something about the laddie that, albeit maybe not as complex as this expression, just hits all the things I love about whisky. There really is no downside to either. Big fan of Bruichladdich. -
Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed October 18, 2018 (edited December 7, 2018)So I want to thank @PBMichiganWolverine for his review of this that spurred my purchase. My grandfather died while I was young. I’m frequently told that I remind my family of him yet I have little to no memory of him. I spoke with an old timer who knew him a couple years ago who informed me he drank Cutty Sark by the case. Being the ridiculous Scotch snob I absurdly think I am I could never pull the trigger on the bottom shelf brand. After reading @PBMichiganWolverine review I finally pulled the trigger on this expression. Not only is it really amazing, it has made me feel like I have a link to the past. Nose is a sweet sour wood, but the palate explodes with an oily black pepper savory brine and medium to long finish. It’s not a phoned in thin tolerable blend. This is a great whisky for a ridiculously low price. Can’t wait to get another bottle. -
Shackleton Blended Malt
Blended Malt — highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 18, 2018 (edited October 27, 2018)I can’t describe this better than @cascode. See his review he nailed it. The nose is great. Very complex orchard fruits and spice. Palate is good not great. Too thin and doesn’t live up to the nose. -
Aberlour A'bunadh
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 17, 2018 (edited October 24, 2018)Nose is deep dark brown sugar and raisins. Palate, very complex. Smooth for the ABV. Dark sweet plums, no prunes I think and then the raisins. Pleasant spice through the sinuses. Thick and oily. I’m not a sherry bomb guy at all but this is perfect after a big meal. Very enjoyable change of pace from the savory maritime scotches I normally reach for. -
Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed October 12, 2018 (edited November 21, 2018)I find this expression spectacular. It’s so well balanced with mild sweetness followed by full savory brine, peat and wood spice. Lovely. -
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed September 15, 2018 (edited November 13, 2019)I’ve past by this bottle countless times because Why but an Islay that isn’t peated? Boy, what a mistake. This is beyond delicious. It hits all my favorite notes and is so unique. It has what I can only describe as a pure barley taste that develops to a complex sweetness (honey?) that quickly transitions to a spicy Brine finish. Amazing. -
Tomatin 12 Year Bourbon & Sherry Casks
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 7, 2018 (edited October 13, 2018)Disagree with the expert review. I don’t get any bitter taste. At first I felt it was a little too sweet. I don’t traditionally like strong Sherry finishes. But, I’ve really enjoyed this expression. It’s sweetness is complex with an oily mouthfeel and a spicy bourbon like finish. It gets 5 stars because it such a surprise at the price point in my area. -
I was pleasantly surprised at this NAS expression. I love Bowmore 12, but didn’t have high hopes for this one. First off it doesn’t taste young. Nose of light honey, fruit, spice, very slight peat. The palate is a little confused. Maybe because I’m wanting the 12 experience, but it’s very pleasant. Like the nose but with some heat, but not an alcohol heat. It’s not bitter. Sweet with a salty spicy short to medium finish. Price is great too.
