Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 17, 2018 (edited March 30, 2018)The first bottle I had of this a year or so ago was delicious. Lots of complex spices, vanilla, cinnamon, allspice, it felt like drinking Christmas. The second bottle I had last night was a big disappointment. All I got from it was alcohol heat and oak. It was a store select barrel promotion, so maybe that was the problem. Or, it’s just inconsistencies with the single barrel concept. Either way I’d be hesitant to buy again. -
Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 25, 2018 (edited October 21, 2024)I love the nose. It’s sweet and no hint of grain or alcohol. It’s clean . . . corn, vanilla, slight cinnamon. On the palate not as good, but not disappointing. A little thin on first impression. But, if you give it a chance it opens up to a quality Bourbon with everything you would want. A mix of great sweet and spice flavors and background of quality wood. No bitter or off putting finishes. A fairly complex and lingering finish. Home run for a bourbon you can get for 30.00 at Walmart. -
Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 14, 2018 (edited March 26, 2019)In an effort to try and wash away my heartache after the Saints loss opened this bottle. Nose is alcohol, burnt brown sugar, more heat, slight spice. On palate, some dark fruit sweetness, oak (slightly bitter), spicy finish that is medium to long. The finish is more hot alcohol than Rye spice. Or, maybe a combination. Picks up some momentum as the glass dwindles. Overall, it’s okay for $27.00, but probably won’t buy again. Wouldn’t turn it down. Had higher hopes. I’ll stick with my Weller at this price point. Or, Four Roses small batch. I do like the 100 proof though. -
Good nose. Sweet, corn, hint of vanilla, and some spice. On the taste the start is very interesting, I’d describe it as dry and short. Then, like a switch going off, great long finish of sweet corn, complex spices, and what I feel is a salty brine finish that I love. Wasn’t sold at first, but mostly through the bottle and can say it’s a very interesting and unique Bourbon.

Johnnie Walker Select Casks Rye Cask Finish
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed December 21, 2017 (edited October 21, 2024)About a third of the way through the bottle and I am really beginning to appreciate this expression. On the nose, not much, grain liquor, sweet, spice. I was worried the Rye influence wouldn’t work...wrong. It’s very well balanced. I get a sweet vanilla, but not overly sweet that transitions to a briny peppery finish that is really delicious. I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another bottle...especially since it isn’t expensive. Great value. -
This Scotch is close to being very good. I did get some of the fruity nuances and brine that I enjoyed very much, but I found the flavors brief and followed by a bitter wood that was off putting. I really didn’t pick up any smoke at all. So far not one I’ll buy again, but we will see how the bottle progresses. I’ll update if things change.

Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 17, 2017 (edited October 21, 2024)Finally found my way to this Bourbon. In my quest to explore fine scotch and bourbon I just assumed it wasn’t worth my attention given the price point. So, I apologize to the whisky Gods because of my pretentious avoidance of this Bourbon. I can only that you and this app for finally causing me to buy a handle. Thank you. Nose, sweet, alcohol, and a little more I can’t specifically identify. It really shines on the palate. The perfect balance of sweet and spice. I feel like I can taste the wheat in the background. . . like a Virginia pipe tobacco. Maybe close to a subtle hay. I’ve had so many more expensive Whisky’s that pale in comparison. All I can say is thanks to you and this distillery and if it maintains this quality it will always have a place in my cabinet. So, if you are reading this wondering whether to pull the trigger . . . DO IT. As for comments . . . Please let me know what else I’m missing. -
I agree with the expert review on this one. And, that’s not always the case. This is a very enjoyable dram at this price point. My go to affordable blends have been Monkey Shoulder and Isle of Skye, but they have made way for this one. Sure, I get some of the grain whisky in the aroma, but I also get apples and caramel. The mouth feel is not as thin as I thought it would be. Slight heat, cinnamon, that gives way to a really interesting sweet apple chocolate finish. Solid.
