Balcones Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed April 11, 2015 (edited July 14, 2017)Give this 10 to 15 minutes in the glass to open up. Try it without water first and then slowly add some, bit by bit until you hit your sweet spot. This was powerful with alcohol due to the high proof but the flavor was powerful and just amazing. Rich, with deep fruits like a sherried scotch. Delicious light smokey flavors, maybe from the barrel char? Sweet vanilla hits and some caramel like a very rich creme brulee or flan. This has become one of my favorite whiskies. Who knows where the taste will go now that they've removed the original creator/distiller but up to this point the whisky is fantastic. Well worth the try if you can find a bottle. -
Full disclosure, I had a glass at a restaurant and it probably came from a bottle that was open for some time. That being said, this didn't knock my socks off. Oily, creamy, sweet fruit and smokey but this seemed rather flat and not very complex. It all kind of blended together and came across as tasty enough but generally unremarkable. I'll have to try this again with a fresher bottle to get a better sense of what the 16 brings to the table.

George Dickel No. 12
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed December 29, 2014 (edited March 7, 2018)Smells like a bourbon with vanilla and caramel in the nose. The taste is very smooth with a bit of a drying feeling on first sip. This is a good whisky and has some nice corn sweetness with some mellow wood spice and smooth vanilla and caramel on the palate. Overall, well worth the money and a hell of a lot better than JD in my opinion. Not complex or overly interesting but a good competent drink neat, on the rocks or mixed. If you swear by JD, you should really try Dickel and give it a shot. It's hands down better in my opinion and the same price. -
Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey (Discontinued)
American Single Malt — Colorado, USA
Reviewed December 14, 2014Which batches are people liking/not liking? There's a batch number on the bottle and apparently the flavor will differ depending on batch... I have a bottle of batch 122 and it's pretty tasty. Pretty smooth with some nice wood spice backed by vanilla and toasty, malty goodness. A little burn up front but it mellows out nicely into the sweeter flavors rather quickly. Not very complex but pretty good. -
Westward Small Batch Oregon Straight Malt Whiskey
American Single Malt — Oregon, USA
Reviewed December 14, 2014 (edited March 4, 2020)Wow, this is a great American single malt. This is very smooth, with subtle oak notes woven through the larger malt, vanilla and honey flavors. I really thought I was drinking an Irish whiskey until my brother-in-law showed me the bottle. Great stuff and very drinkable neat. I just wish it wasn't $50 a bottle for the 375ml. Considering it's only 2 years old, it has an amazing flavor profile but at this price point I can't justify this over Stranahan's or many other single malts out there. 5 stars for the flavor. -
Definitely a great bourbon, particularly for the price. The first glass from the bottle was terrible for me but a few weeks later after some friends had polished off half, it has oxidized and opened up quite a bit. Now I can sip it straight and enjoy the sweet broubon flavors I was first expecting. Brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, caramel corn. It's not too sweet, even though the flavors are all candy. At $25 a bottle you really can't go wrong with this as an introductory bourbon.

A great peated whisky. Brine and bandaids are definitely things you'll get from the nose. The peat smoke is ever present and mingles with the alcohol to give it that medicinal quality. Think sucrets with some smoke and you'll be in the ballpark. The taste is good, with generous peat but balanced and intermingled with some lovely nutty flavors and fruit flavors. I personally feel like there's some pear in there but wasn't able to convince a friend as his taste buds were focused on the salt and sea flavors. There was also some maple and smoked bacon flavors happening for me. All in all, these melded very nicely and it was a great glass of whisky.
