Tastes

For those who may not know this, Buffalo Trace did a bunch of experiments and then bottled them in 375ml bottles and are charging a fairly premium price. The bottles all have barrel numbers on them so reviews will be for specific barrel numbers. There's an entire singleoakproject website to talk about what this is. Just clarifying it's not a single bottle/flavor profile - so these ratings and reviews are all going to vary widely!

Rubbing alcohol, a little grassy. Burned without a flavor to back it up. Not my favorite white whiskey.

Buttery brown sugar tastes with vanilla and light spices, like a good cookie. All felt rather diluted, like it was watered just past it's stretching point. Not bad and a nice sipper anyway but I kept wondering if I'd added water and realized I hadn't...

Wood, wood, wood and more wood. I know there's some bourbon in here but I'll have to come back to this one and see if I can find it through the forest of oak casks it's hiding in. UPDATE: I've let this sit for a while and have revisited. The overabundance of wood flavor still dominates this but I am getting more of the bourbon underneath. And when I get a glimpse of it, it's a great and sweet bourbon flavor. Unfortunately the oak influence is still depressingly overpowering. Not on my list of things to try again until they change their aging program. I wouldn't recommend this as a purchase, especially given the price. I got a bottle less then half-price at a clearance sale from my local liquor store - even at that drop this doesn't feel worth it.

For me this was creamy vanilla, like toasted whipped cream with some red fruit, raisins and maltiness. Then some tastes of wood spice and a little alcohol burn. A good start to my education though I've tasted better since.

Sweet, fruity notes with a thick delicious feel and some lovely maltiness. Love it but it gives me a headache every time. Extra tannins from the port finish? Ah well, worth the pain.

Smooth, corny vanilla notes and wood. Spices from the rye start to hit in the middle. Great, cheap everyday sipper - LDI or not. This actually tasted like a more expensive whiskey I'd found (also LDI sourced) so happy to find a cheaper version!

Vanilla, caramel, oak. Sweet corn and a softer feel after the first sip. Pretty tasty.
