Intensely herbal, grassy, anise, and a strong alcohol heat. Bitter herbs and earthiness and intense sweetness play off each other. Viscous and mouth coating, with a deep lingering sweetness and minty tingle. Great to sip on its own after dinner, but essential for classic cocktails. Can't go wrong with this.

St. George Dry Rye Reposado Gin
Barrel-Aged Gin — California, USA
Reviewed February 28, 2019 (edited June 13, 2023)strong but well balanced flavors-- juniper, citrus, spice-- over the dry rye base. A little fruit and vanilla roundness from aging in oak give this the elegant finish. I love barrel aged gins, and there are some very good ones more readily available than this rare bottle, but this is worth the search. -
Cappelletti Amaro Sfumato Rabarbaro
Amaro — Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
Reviewed February 26, 2019 (edited March 12, 2019)Sweet dark fruit, cola and citrus underneath, light smoke flavor (not as much as I expected from descriptions, and not as much as I wanted), yet not very bitter either. Nice mix in rye cocktails. -
Empress 1908 Indigo Gin
Distilled Gin — British Columbia, Canada
Reviewed January 15, 2019 (edited January 8, 2024)Beautiful color(s). Sweet and floral against a surprisingly strong juniper base that holds up. Unusual gin for surprising cocktails. 2023, Important to note: even kept in a dark cool liquor closet, the beautiful color of this gin faded to a light clear grey color after 2 years. So don't save it! Still tastes ok, but... I'm dropping my rating from 4.25 to 3.75. -
