Ransom The Emerald 1865 Straight American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Oregon, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited August 9, 2018)Batch #2. Great recreation of an Irish whiskey from a creative distillery. Sweet grain smell, little peat or wood. soft smooth grain and fruit on the tongue, creamy mouthfeel, but spice grows. almost floral/vanilla finish that lingers. I've been eaking this one out in small doses over four years, and like it more each time I come back to it. BANG! -
Henry DuYore's Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Oregon, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited February 16, 2021)Really smoky and oak wood in nose and tongue. Rye spice holds up across the pallet. Leather and wood finish. An acquired taste perhaps, but worth it. It's not going to be great in every cocktail, but straight with ice, or with amaro like a Manhattan... Ahhh Yes! Retasted 2/2021. Profile remains the same--oak and leather, smoky, corn but not super sweet. It is an unusual profile, but still enjoyable. -
Such a great barrel aged gin. Sweet and lightly oaked, juniper and spices hold forth, with a little citrus beneath. Beautiful color and rich mouthfeel. Transforms a Tom Collins into something worth drinking. Try it in a French 75 for something brand new. Excellent, one of my favorites.34.0 USD per Bottle

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited July 15, 2022)Price, quality, taste... can't be beat for a vintaged single barrel. Very consistent and released @42 to 44 ABV. At the price point you can mix this or sip it with a little ice. Sweet corn and caramel bourbon goodness, vanilla oak and a little smoke. Round and soft with a little rye spice in the finish. Easy to find anytime go to bourbon. Can't miss. July 2022: A SAD SAD day now that this is only available in Kentucky. The EW BIB is OK, and the Black and 1783 are...meh. I will miss this old standby. Poor choice, Heaven Hill !!! 😟🤬 -
Sweet grass and peppery grain on the nose. 110 and a little hot without ice, but rich, spicy grain and mint, and vanilla oak and leather in the mouth. Clean smokey finish. Neat or with an ice cube, and great in a cocktail. 4.5 rate. 2023: the more I try this the more I'm impressed, even as the price climbs and availability falls. Now my rye of choice. Give it a 5!

High West Son of Bourye
Other Whiskey — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited August 3, 2018)MGPI sourced whiskey and mixed by HW, but they do it well (if too pricey!). Spice and orange and sweet grass vanilla on the nose. Sweet cherry stone fruit and vanilla, oak, and then spicy grassy rye comes on in the finish. Medium body, light color. Easy to drink and appreciate as a high rye bourbon. -
