Reviewed July 12, 2023 (edited September 24, 2023)Aroma is strong vanilla and brown sugar or Molasses. Really nice. Flavor is dark caramel and black pepper and deep like a Sugar Daddy. A few drops of water brings out some coconut, maple and more spice.. Long finish. Creamy mouthfeel -
High West A Midwinter Night's Dram The Encore
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed June 21, 2023 (edited September 24, 2023)Had the pleasure of being at a private event at the Distillery in Park City. Literally had the opportunity to try all of their stuff. I'm a huge Midwinter's Night fan.... This was very good, but didn't have the depth and complexity of the standard version. -
Knob Creek 18 Year Bourbon 30th Anniversary (2022 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 14, 2023I was gifted this bottle by lovely friends that are getting married. They have asked me to officiate their wedding. Proud to do just that. Aroma is coconut, oak, brown sugar and butterscotch. Flavor has all of these, plus a hint of mint and some Rye spice. Peppery on the finish. Lingering finish is spice, oak and vanilla. Initial thought is that I wish it was a touch more oily. Chocolate notes in the finish as well. Maybe cocoa is more accurate. -
Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength (Batch 12)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed April 5, 2023 (edited April 6, 2023)Aroma Band-Aid, Spalding rubber ball, distant fire. Dark toasted, but not burnt grains. Some sweetness around the edges. Salt sea air. Bright Brass in color Almost oily, with a menthol note that lays on the tongue. From time to time goes to mint. Some eucalyptus as well. I can't write this review without mentioning Cloraseptic Throat Spray. Nice toasted oak, licorice, menthol again, very herbaceous, salty. Hint of vanilla. Menthol lingers with black pepper with salt and oak below. Finish improves with a touch of water and the menthol, licorice notes expand with the camp fire getting closer to you. Some more cereal grains emerge. More floral and herbaceous and some ginger as it opens. Man, it's glorious. Almost as if you had smoked a light cigar. Much later grain and sweetness emerge as you become accustomed to the glass. I think I've arrived... Love it -

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Straight Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 9, 2023 (edited June 20, 2023)Oh man, this is real good. Really Good. Almond was first thought on the nose. Then went to menthol and mint... And Floral. Perfume, floral, spearmint, menthol, layer below cocoa powder and a moment of coffee. Like two layers to the flavor. Oily on the tongue, which is my favorite. Cinnamon moment. Finish is long luscious, oily and herbaceous. While there is a sweetness just below the surface it's definitely told to stay in the background... Depth.. Yeah, great glass of Rye -
Writing this review and enjoying this so much makes me realize... I've kind of arrived. I truly enjoy the peatiest of peaty Islay scotches... This is really an amazing Scotch. Like a tough guy from the northeast with a thick brash crusty outer personality. But once you get beyond that, a sweet, complex and even delicate heart. At first it's like walking towards a camp sire with a distant campfire. Smokey & Meaty at first, then it opens to show some grain, honey and even fruity notes. A sweetness comes out that you would never think could hide here. But it does. Water makes it richer, brings out mint and menthol. Deeper with a longer finish. Glorious

Powers John's Lane Release 12 Year
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed March 5, 2023 (edited March 6, 2023)I know I'm a sneaky big Irish Whiskey fan. This is a great addition to my collection. (suggested by Ralphy). Honey, vanilla, like cereal/grain notes and a confectionery sugar sweetness. Reminds me of Frosted Flakes a bit. I forget the other whiskey that had the same note for me. It's meant as a positive. Aroma is sweet and of the sugary cereal. Really enjoy this. If I'm being honest, I liked it so much that it never occurred to me to add some water. Having thought of it I did do and didn't like the result. Some heat came forward and that's about it. Just not worth it *** ***. I was wrong, it's 20 minutes later and the water settled in wonderfully. Richer with a longer finish. I increased my score to 4.25. Yes, really good with more vanilla
