Tastes

Purchased Oct 2020. It does what it says - high rye - but doesn’t have anything else. The nose has a strong turpentine smell. The taste at least has a good high spice, but is quite harsh. Hard to find other flavors here. The finish lingers a long time, but it’s the bad aspects that stay. I’ll have to try this in a mix or two. Stay well away from it as a straight pour. After TJ’s offered a suprisingly good $15 straight bourbon, i thought this was worth a shot. Deep disappointment.

For what there is, I find this a good attempt at a themed product. It’s not at all remakable, but it also isn’t dreadful. I’ll still happily take a Four Roses Small Batch or Old Forester 1920 as a regular drink straight, but this makes a perfectly respectable mixed drink ingredient for an Old Fashioned or Godfather. Maybe I’ll hold on to the bottle when it’s empty.

A very smooth pour! Nose has a good amount of old leather to it, and almost no spice! Taste is quite sweet, with a slight spice (clove, maybe?) and a good black pepper finish. Lingers a long while. So much of a better dram than the standard Bulleit bottle.

Nose has a good strong Rye spice with a hint of oak. Some alcohol on the nose, but it's overpowered by the spice. The taste keeps the rye going, plus some buddha's hand under it. The finish is stringent, with a decently long afterburn. This feels like it might make a more flavourful Sazerac cocktail, though you may need to add a touch more sugar to compensate. Bought at Whole Foods in a box set: half-bottle of Bulleit Bourbon, half-bottle of Bulleit Rye.

The nose is pretty heavy on the alcohol, with a hint of green apple and orange rind underneath. The taste has a reasonable amount of oak to it, but very little in other flavours. Lots of spice in the finish, with a large amount of old oak taste. Not a remarkable bourbon by any measure, but a good one for all-around use. I find it works to make a pretty decent Old Fashioned, or even a Sazerac if you want to spice things up a bit, but not something I'd drink straight if I'm looking for a flavourful drink. Bought in a box at Whole Foods: half-bottle of Bulleit Bourbon, half-bottle of Bulleit Rye. Reasonable cost, but I'd be more inclined to reach for an Old Forester instead.

I get a good smell of old leather on the nose, with some undertones of grapefruit. The taste is strong with candy corn - no surprise, really - with a medium burn to it. The finish has a lot more bitterness to it than I expected, but the oak comes out at that point. A fairly decent bottle, but not in the end something I found satisfying. 2019 batch 7, bottle 541

I was not fond of this when I first opened it, but the taste has grown on me. While it's not something I would pick up again, it's not half bad. Nose has a strong candy apple and maraschino cherry to it. Taste is sweet, with a nice spice in the background and some citrus in the foreground - mandarin orange, maybe. Very smooth. Finish gives a medium linger, with more spice than when actually drinking it. Not much other flavor staying behind, so it's cleaner than I would expect.
