Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 30, 2019 (edited November 11, 2020)Wonderful nose. Nose is Carmel, sweet vanilla, leather and green apple. Palate is so good and deep. Not too sweet, but nice and smooth. Carmel and vanilla with leather and some great oakiness. The mouthfeel isn’t very thick but pleasant with a medium finish. I really like this, I’m glad I went for it. -
Redneck Riviera Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed August 30, 2019 (edited May 2, 2021)I wanted to hate this, since I live in Nashville and always thought of this as a gimmicky whiskey to sell to tourists. But it’s not bad. A lot of vanilla on the nose and palate and very sweet. And at 80 proof, it’s easy to drink. -
Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed August 29, 2019 (edited December 5, 2021)I’ve had this many times. I used to work for a country artist that had everyone do a shot of JD before the show, so I’ve gotten pretty familiar with it. Everyone always shuddered after taking it, except when it was about the last 1/4 of the bottle. It had oxidized enough that took the edge off. Anyway, now I’m tasting for the 1st time since I’ve really dove into whiskey and developed a much more in depth palate for it. On the nose there’s vanilla and a whole lot of banana and ethanol. The palate is sweet, some banana and oak, but a lot of rough alcohol flavor as it goes into the finish. The big part finish that I get is a really unpleasant lingering alcohol flavor. More specifically, the smell of nail polish remover/rubbing alcohol and bandaids. That’s the part that used to make me shudder. This is not a pleasant sipper. Too much rubbing alcohol. And it’s not even strong, which is surprising that it has such a present cheap alcohol taste to it. Adding water made it even worse. I would say it’s fine with coke, which I’ve had countless times, but I’m learning that if you don’t like it neat, don’t drink it at all. -
George Dickel No. 12
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed August 28, 2019 (edited October 21, 2019)Nose is a big and corny, sweet vanilla cream. The palate is sweet with corn and butter and a bit of leather/mustiness that is pleasant. The finish is on the shorter side with a slight mineral taste. People tend to love or hate Dickel. I would say that I really enjoyed it, and I appreciate it’s distinct taste. -
1792 Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 27, 2019 (edited August 28, 2019)The nose is vanilla, cherries and apricot. The palate is brown sugar, cherries with some oak. It finishes out nicely with a little bite, but fades fairly quickly. Not bad at all, but not overly complex either. -
Peerless Kentucky Straight Rye (24 Months)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 27, 2019 (edited August 28, 2019)This one was interesting. Very forward with the notes. Though as I nosed and tasted later in, I could pick out more. I let this one breath for about 10mins or so before I took a sip. And I will say, when I went for a 2nd pour, I couldn’t taste as much as I could with the pour that had breathed for a bit. The nose is a little vanilla, mint, green apple The palate is a little sweet, and slight leather, that leads to a spicyness that you expect from a rye. A good amount of spice. The finish has the spices burn on the back of the throat. It’s a good whiskey that is hard to believe it’s only two years old. Letting it breathe is the key I think. Adding a little water diluted it too much. Got the 200mL bottle before I splurged in the big boy. We’ll have to see how the rest of the bottle goes before I decide to if I think the price is worth it. It’s good and somewhat unique though. -
Ordered at a bar, served in a rocks glass. Nose has a decent amount of vanilla sweetness and some brown sugar. Along with alcohol burn. The palate is not too sweet with some baking spices and a very nice leather note going on. The medium finish let’s you know it’s barrel proof as it goes down. I added some water halfway through and that smoothed it out a little, but didn’t really add anything. Overall, it’s nice. A little bit on the alcohol fumes side for me. But enjoyable.

Baker's Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 26, 2019 (edited August 28, 2019)Nose is brown sugar and cherries. A slight classic Jim Beam nuttiness comes through on the nose after a few sips. Palate is sweet at first then cherries. Then some leather comes out on the back of the palate along with some oak. There is a nice oily coating on the tongue as well. The finish is on the longer side of medium and some heat comes along with it. Overall, very good bourbon that drinks below it’s proof. -
Very surprised. I’ve put this one off for a while because I have had it many times over the years as a shot or mixed with a coke before and just thought it was a really strong whiskey, nothing special. This was all before my “whiskey awakening”. But now that I’ve actually developed a palate and great appreciation for whiskey I thought I’d give this a try. Also because so many people say it’s one of their favorite budget bourbons. At first the nose is cherries and ethanol. But after the 1st taste I get sweeter aromas like vanilla and butterscotch on the nose. The palate is not too sweet, some oakiness and some leather. A little spiciness on the finish and I get a little bit of corn. Not too much of a burn like I remember before I knew how to drink whiskey. I have a much greater appreciation for this now. It has a lot more depth that I realized. I’m glad I gave it another chance.
